I am keeping on lead until we get get recall back. A few times she has ran off into the distance after seeing another dog. And then follows them. :-[ :-[ Afte two days on lead her loose lead has improved. I have ordered a whistle and began reading total recall again. I guess without realising I relaxed on her training. I never started any gun dog stuff but will play fetch and try make her work for each thrown. Will read my gun dog book soon.
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Hi Jade , dont despair please Most owners have to keep on top of recall , its an ongoing exercise because they are so easily distracted . Sam still has his moments of running to greet a " friend " , ignoring the whistle, so I just spend a little time reinforcing the recall . Do you have a long training line you could use ? Good luck Jade
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! riley is the same as Sam....mostly good but occasionally forgets....and other dogs have always been our nemesis ;D Persevere and you will get there, good luck!
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! I haven't got a training line but was looking into it. Our main walk where we see the dogs is mainly trees and bushes. A wide path but I think it would be too dangerous to use here? The walk in the fields would be ok but we never see dogs here. Would it effect her recall if I let her off lead in the fields? She will zoom after after birds sometimes but will recall but I know she shouldn't do this either.
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Long lines can be a pain around trees Jade, but you learn how to play out the line in open spaces and then reel it in when necessary. They really are a handy tool for reinforcing recall , I used one a lot for Millie when we first got her, its a good safety net , I also found that little pieces of sausage helped too
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! I will look for one today. 10 or 15 metres? It's really getting me down at the moment but I am going to fix it and myself! Hubby walked off yesterday as it was all too much for him. Tried to explain that the dogs she ran off with didn't recall either but he wouldn't listen. : and I known Amy would have picked up on the vibes too! Looks like I have to abandon family dog walks too. Kids behind us, dog in front and hubby moaning in the middle of us all!!!
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! If you're all out together could you play a recall game? Calling her from one of you to another? You could get the kids to hide behind a tree and call her with lots of treats when she finds them. If she legs it to another dog, don't call her just calmly go and get her and continue your walk. My strategy is to call Riley to heel if I spot another dog before he does but then his reward is to get to say hello and have a play. I used to have to get him when I decided play was over but now he comes when called so you can see it does get better I look on my solitary walks with Riley as a bit of quiet time just for the two of us which is lovely in the day to day business of family and work. Enjoy it if you can
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! What would you do if a dog ran up too you? The few with Amy have kept on walking away from me so Amy still goes with them. Did you find this? You would think it was easier for the others to stand still so I could catch up? I guess they probably worried by her!
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Harley used to run off towards other dogs then follow them quite a lot. I would call her, then walk over and put her lead back on. I worked on calling her between my daughter and myself, with us hiding and it worked. I use a very excited voice if I really need to get her attention. I have worked on 'Harley wait', and when she did stop, I would reward her then allow her to say hello if the other owner was ok with this. After their greetings / play, I would praise her and treat her. She has remembered this and now we have it down to 99% of the time
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! When a dog has come up to me and my dogs and is reluctant to leave, I wait for the owner to come. Once a little terrier came haring across an enormous field and refused to leave us, the owner stayed the other side calling and calling, which the little dog completely ignored. So after about five minutes I thought I must get on with my walk, but the dog came with me! So I had to wait while the owner came across the field and tried to catch her dog, she was a small woman and had to cross this long grass, lumpy field, took her ages The dog was called Jonathon which amused me. I suppose one should say "go away" to the dog!
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! I get Harley to sit and wait and treat her until the owner comes over and agrees sits ok to play. If the owner doesn't come over, I get Harley excited about playing with me so she ignores the other dog.
Re: Amy and I belong in this section!
What would you do if a dog ran up too you? The few with Amy have kept on walking away from me so Amy still goes with them. Did you find this? You would think it was easier for the others to stand still so I could catch up? I guess they probably worried by her!
I think this is a bit rude. When I had to do this, Charlie was younger, if people walked away with their dogs I used to just call out in a really friendly voice "could you just hang on while I get my dog? Thanks so much". I used to be quick about it though. With Charlie, we have to be more interesting than other dogs - leaving him to wander along amusing himself is just asking for him to run off and find something more interesting to do. So he is not left to his own devices on off lead walks. He is always "under orders" - running between us in a recall game, retrieving, playing find it or hide and seek, or walking at heel. This means we had to give up the idea that OH and I could walk along chatting while our puppy trotted obediently along beside us. Maybe one day.... One thought that might help though, could you go out walking with other dogs? I notice on the common dogs with no recall will stay with "their" pack of dog walking dogs - well, mostly, anyway. It's quite striking. I know a few owners who go out walking with a dog walker with other dogs for this reason. When I get to do this, it's very relaxing and the only time I can switch off with Charlie off lead.
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! jade this was my biggest struggle,......it takes a lot of patience, you have got to be very consistent, go right back to the beginning of the book and follow it step by step, i still practise the recall every day, i used to be in tears when i saw another dog, i knew he would follow them, :-[ :-[ i used a 10 m recall line, practise every day it is now a pleasure to take him out walking off lead , we have a very good recall now
Re: Amy and I belong in this section!
Looks like I have to abandon family dog walks too. Kids behind us, dog in front and hubby moaning in the middle of us all!!!
This picture of a family walk is one I recognise! Been there, done that and not enjoyed it much!! The suggestions about paired recall and 'hide and seek' are all brilliant ones - perfect for getting everyone playing outside, although for a time on 'family' walks it can help to prioritise location over distance! Sorry, don't know how old your children are right now - my 3 are now teenagers and no longer behave like anchors on a walk, but I know it's still up to me to take responsibility for the dogs at all times... That's fair enough and works better than 5 of us shouting commands! My 10 yr old spaniel decided to remember a previous existence as an absconder this week, after months - years! - of good behaviour. Whatever he suddenly caught the scent of I don't know, but he was off. It happens... we'll be revisiting some more recall work ;D When we passed that spot the next morning, I recalled him just before and we passed it with him at heel on lead. He has a horribly long memory for where good scent has been found! We also met quite possibly the biggest black lab I have ever seen - think he must have been crossed with a carthorse. Not particularly wanting mine to play at that point, I put them back on leads and they sat waiting until the owner appeared to retrieve his dog / horse. (This tends to be how I manage other unwanted dogs, because asking other owners to keep their dogs away only works if they have control over them!! : ) It took a long time. He was not hurrying. When he finally appeared, he said: 'Sorry Ma'am. He's a bit lively because I haven't taken him out for a week.' The combination of that confession and being called Ma'am left me speechless... All of my rambling is just intended to say - we all have walks and days like it! Keep working on the recall Clare
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Shoulder hurts from keeping her mostly on lead today.....that was with stopping as she pulled! I can't wait to get the whistle and get started. I think when another dog is there I do panic and not use our normal recall. It's more of a panic "here" than our stern "here" when it's just for the " training". She came today when I concentrated on my stern " here" . The sun is shinning and a lot more people where about today.
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Hi Jade, ah yes recall my very biggest issue with Charlie boy the absconder We use a very long line to practise recall ALL the time during his walk but thankfully he is not bothered about other dogs, if they come upto him fine, if they don't fine. The "family walk" is a pain frankly and as my children are stroppy teenagers they don't want to come any more which is great news for me I bought a whistle for my 14 year old and he would help me in the garden doing recall games between us for yummy treats and it really works, I also do hide and seek games with him and you will notice how concerned Amy will become if you are out of sight, Charlie cries like a blooming baby : Also a great tip I got from this forum was to use a toy/ball for training and not at any other time, but it must be one that Amy will go crazy for and then you can introduce it on your walks at use it as a distraction at dodgy times but don't over use it. If you are reading Total Recall don't rush and work through the exercises carefully and maybe you could get some help from a dog friendly friend and leave the hubby at home Keep going it will all come together. xx
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Can I have some advice on how to get her super interested in a toy/ball. I think ball will be easier to carry around and cheaper to replace. In the big field we play fetch and she is really interested, I only let her have it a few times then it's back away for a bit then I get it out again later. Is this the right thing to do? Last time we played " find the ball". Making her sit while I put it down then releasing her to find it. Is that ok to get her interested?
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! Thats fine Jade , I got Sam hooked on tennis balls from being a puppy , I do use a gundog dummy which he adores, but a tennis ball fits in the pocket easier for walks . Likewise with Millie , we have only had her for six months and she is a terrier, much harder to train than any gundog, very single minded and stubborn, but she is now a ball addict too Play at retrieving games with Amy , even indoors and in the garden , and when she brings the ball back and releases it, give her a small treat , the ball will then become an invalueable tool where recall is concerned . I find now that when Millie is off lead , if I have a ball she ignores other dogs completely , works a treat
Re: Amy and I belong in this section! : Hubby just come in and shared his dinner with her! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
