Willow and Shadow had their annual jabs this morning - the usual Lepto/Parvo mix, plus rabies and, since we're travelling to the UK tomorrow night, a worming tablet, too.

Glad to report that Willow seems to have lost most of her nervousness. The surgery was empty when we went in, so we went straight through to the consulting room, where they both sat and waited beautifully. Since Willow has been rather nervous and stressed in the vet's since her spay, I did lots of little easy behaviours to take her mind off things while we waited. As soon as Jordi came in, she threw herself at him and rolled onto her back like she normally does
As much as it's very much a submissive posture, the rest of her body language was so much more relaxed than normal; no lip-licking or yawning and a generally happy ear and tail carriage. Jordi had a little roll around on the floor with her between examinations, and gave her plenty of treats. She didn't even flinch with the vaccination, although she wouldn't take a treat from my hand until the needle was out. Fair enough.

Shadow was a lot more up-tight about it, strangely, since he has never had anything negative happen there. His tail was between his legs and he was shaking during the examinations. Before and after, he was happy as Larry, and he's not normally averse to being handled, so I'm not quite sure what he was responding to. I suppose it was probably just the relatively unfamiliar place (it's only the third time he's been there, I think), combined with a strange man that was shining lights into all his orifices...

Afterwards, J had to pop to a shop, so I sat with the dogs in a precinct, tucked to the side but with lots of passing foot traffic. This would be nothing for most dogs, but it's very unusual for us and, even on a quiet day, it was still a lot busier than anything they usually see. There were people walking their dogs through and people of all shapes and sizes, with shopping trolleys, in wheelchairs, with sticks. The occasional brave pigeon coming up to say hi. Not one bark and not one pull. Not even anything more than a glance when there was a mad bustle of activity as an elderly man fell over getting onto an escalator in the doorway of the shop we were sat opposite. Everyone nearby ran to help, except me, because of the dogs. I felt bad about that, but I figured two Labradors licking his face and thinking it was a great game probably wouldn't have gone down too well, as he ascended to the second floor, feet first...

Oh dear, I normally wouldn't do vaccines and worming at the same time and I think poor Shadow has felt the effects. He has just thrown up four times - well, he ate it back the first time, so does that make it only three? I guess this means the de-wormer won't be effective, but it's in his passport now, so I'll just wait until we're home to give him another dose. He's absolutely fine in himself, which is more than can be said for the three different beds he chose to use, two of which are supposed to be coming with us on our travels tomorrow....

Oh poor Shadow. Perhaps a call to the vet to check. I haven't done all the jabs with Juno plus a worker but have with both the cats with no problems. Hope he's better soon.

    Aw no.....poor lamb.
Lilly has been sick after wormers too, and also a bit loose (ok - diarrhoea) - not ideal for travelling, so I hope he makes a quick recovery.
    Hope Willow is ok

That was a busy day. Vacation in the U,K. ?

Oban got his rabies yesterday, after being delayed for several months due to his medical exemption. I was perversely almost happy about that medical exemption as it meant fewer poisons and toxins associated with the vaccine going into his body but in light of some recent disturbing things going on where I live I told the Vet I wanted him vaccinated. We had to wait for some blood tests to come back to normal but now he's safe. I still will not do any more of the other vaccines and never did do Lepto or Lymes, the vaccines are so controversial. It does mean we cannot travel though, as I cannot board him without those other vaccines, not even at the Vet's, which is a big tick off.

Willow is fine, thanks, Jac, no side effects at all. Shadow is in fine fettle other than that; we've just been out for a walk, where he was as energetic as ever and has had a good long drink as usual on coming back home. I'll feed him later and see how he deals with it. I don't think he needs a vet consult just yet; I know it's common for dogs to sometimes be sick after wormers even without all the injections at the same time.

The vaccines are required here by law. If you own a dog, you have to have it registered with the government, microchipped and vaccinated against Leptospirosis, Distemper, Parvovirus and Rabies. Of course, there are those people that choose not to register their dogs with the government, but for those of us who like to follow the rules, there's no discussion; you want a dog, it has to be vaccinated.

I wouldn't call the UK trip a "vacation" as such. Last time we went over (May) we drove well over 4,000km in under two weeks. It's just a trip to say hi to family and exchange Christmas gifts before we're caught up in the madness of the ski season. It gives us a chance to do lots of online shopping to bring back in the car, too, and go and have a catch-up with my business partners. We're also fitting in a couple of days of training with the doglets next week. Most excitingly, we're also going to meet a couple of the forum doggies, including the handsome and famous Riley! :D :D :D

Poor boy . I find Harley used to be sick after her wormer. We changed the brand and he has been fine since. I hope Shadow is better soon.
Enjoy your trip to the UK . Harley is jealous of you meeting the famous Riley

It was Drontal, which we have used before, but it was a higher dose than we've used before, because they've grown, obviously. I'm changing to Milbemax for the next one, anyway, because of the extra cover. Hopefully they'll be fine with that.

That's interesting. The only vaccination required by law where I am is rabies. I could titre Oban to be sure his antigen levels are protective but if he bit someone (or someone said he did) our Public Health board would not accept the titre levels.

None of the other vaccinations is required by law but many doggy day care, boarding and training facilities will ask for them. Some will accept titres. Among the other usual vaccination though we have one you do not, Hepatitis. Oban did have his DH2PP when he was young and titre shows his levels are still protective.

I'm sure it will be nice for you to see family again and visit even if your schedule is a bit hectic. Safe trip.

Oh no, poor Shadow (and poor beds). Hope he feels better for your trip.

We don't give Ella Drontal after a very strange reaction to it. It sent her like a meth addict! At first the vet tried to suggest it was just puppy behaviour but when I said she didn't lie down or sleep for nearly six hours and was running round like a crazy dog and crying they realised there was more too it. After some research we discovered it's a rare reaction but has happened to others.

Enjoy your trip ☺ Looking forward to the updates (and photos)!

    Whoop whoop !!!!

The only downside is you have to meet crazy Obi too ;)

The police chap round the corner would rather titre test but their dogs have to go into kennels so they vaccinate. Same here, I could be tempted to test rather than vaccinate but the kennels wouldn't accept it and I have to be able to board them.

Even the ferrets have to be vaccinated against distemper and rabies, and they almost never leave the apartment!

Poor Shadow is telling me he is Starving Hungry To Death. I gave him his dinner, but I just found him bouncing to try to get at a chicken I just roasted and left cooling at the back of the work surface. He almost never counter-surfs and certainly not with that level of urgency. Poor man. I just did Willow's nails again, so he got to have some for being settled during that. But, honestly, he thinks he's never been fed :D :D :D
