Penny has cut her foot again! If you remember the injury to her foot we had just after Christmas... That only fully healed a couple of weeks ago. And now she's done it again *sigh*.

It's the same foot but in a different place - it's that bit of pad they have that sticks and dangles a bit on the back of their front feet. She's scraped it underneath and I didn't notice until she was led on our bed watching me get ready for work and started licking it. She had also bled all over our white duvet cover (I know, I know, white!!!)

So I have bathed it and cleaned it up. I can tell it's a scrape this time (a lot of debate last time about what it actually was) as there is a bit of skin hanging off. Yuck. I totally meant to put a buster collar on before I left for work this morning but I was too distracted making sure the bin wasn't in the kitchen so we didn't have a repeat of the crisp packet incident from yesterday.

Oh dear! Poor girl... Hope it heals up fast.

Now, Miss Penny, no more scraping your paw pads, ok?

Well I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help prevent it happening. We don't do a huge amount of pavement walking because it's only five minutes to the field, maybe less, so perhaps her pads are particularly soft?

I know that after the forum walk in December her paws were cut and sore for a while because we mostly walked on a gravelly path... So maybe her pads just aren't very soft?

poor penny, hope it heals quickly.

Have you tried maybe putting some paw wax on her paws to try and harden them up a bit? something like mushers secret or something like it.

    Hi Lauren.

I don't want to add to your worry but how thick is the piece of skin ?

My old lab did a very similar thing. Unfortunately he had to have the slice of skin removed because it was too thick to just come off on its own. He did it on the edge of a concrete flag sliding for the ball !!! The OH was playing with him at the time you can imagine my reaction. !!!

    Hope it heals quickly. :)

Oh it's not a big bit, just like when you scrape your knuckle or something and take the top layer of skin off.

poor Miss Penny....sounds like she needs to toughen up her paws a bit - build up callouses if you will.

With it being that "knuckle piece" and not the true pad...I'm wondering if she is catching it on something, and maybe it's not from walking on concrete....just a thought.

    Hope she heals up quickly...

Yeah I think that's what she did this time. She was racing around like a loon so probably caught it on a stone or something.

Looking back to the last time I think she cut it on something in the river she went paddling in on Boxing Day - it was when we got back that I noticed that one.

She seems to be quite accident prone! :(
