Me again!!!! Cooper still waking (clean and dry) around the 5 am time. In crate at 10pm. The query I have is that he will go to toilet but then wants thru to living room in company to sleep.

He went into crate for a while after 5.30 loo visit, but only settled with me in room. When I left.... Howled to get out.

Would sitting in room with him until a later hour then opening crate door whilst silent teach him anything?

Don't want to teach him wrong thing?

I am a previous dog owner - but wasn't crate trained.......

    Any advice?

That's what I did with Tatze when she was a pup, she woke early for a wee then wouldn't settle in her crate. I used to take her to the sofa and we'd both snooze until breakfast.

I didn't let her out for her wee straight away. I pottered a bit, put the kettle on etc so that she didn't associate the barking with being let out. I also waited for quiet before I entered the room - but she was clever, she heard me get up and waited quietly anyway.

She adores her crate and still uses it now at 3 years old. I no longer close the door unless it's to give her a bone or chew which I don't want the puppy to have/steal.

My other 3 pups have not been crated but I still get up with them, so long as it's no earlier than 6am - lol. Earlier than 6am I let them shout 'till they settle. But I have a puppy pen so they can wee on the puppy pad.

This morning I woke Kara (8 weeks old) at 7am! Hurrah! She had used the pad for a wee once in the night but she was full up this morning and I was able to take her out to do her first wee.

I love the puppy pen arrangement - peaceful nights!

    :)

Another one with a puppy pen here - my pup went out at 5am at first, and then back in her pen. She made a noise for the first few mornings and got ignored. She didn't wee in her pen, she was just shouting at us to hurry up and then shouting at us because she got put back in her pen. She is quiet in the mornings now, because absolutely nothing happened if she barked.

Jesse is 11 weeks , he has a puppy playpen with his bed and toys. I usually let him out between 10 - 11pm and take him to his playpen, with his favorite toy. He settles down after a few minutes and made it until 7am without an accident. We ordered a large crate he seems to like the one at my mom's house.
We had only 2 accidents in a month, so proud of my boy.
