Does anyone give their dogs antlers to chew? Any thoughts? Good or bad? Riley gets through rawhide quite quickly and although he's held off the furniture he does love to chew, anything other than kongs get destroyed. I was concerned that rawhide might not be ideal in too large a quantity because of his slightly sensitive stomach and thought antlers might be better, partly because they're tougher and partly because they're completely unprocessed.

Re: Antler chews These seem to be increasing in popularity now don't they. I have a plentiful supply of Roe antlers but am a bit wary and have not given them to the dogs yet. My concern is that they will be able to devour them and that they might have the same potential for blocking the gut as a recreational bone. Maybe the ones sold as dog chews are from bigger deer? I would be interested to hear of anyone else's experience too. Rawhide makes all my dogs sick. I give the puppy giant rawhide bones that she can't devour, but take them away as soon as she manages to start swallowing chunks. If the older dogs get hold of them, they scoff the lot and then throw it all up. Lovely! Pippa

Re: Antler chews What an interesting website! Though it may take me a while to recover from the shock of seeing a single red deer antler priced at £69!! We have thrown them away in the past..... I may try the puppy with a large Roe antler under supervision, and see what happens..... For those that fancy trying red deer or fallow antlers for larger dogs, I think you can pick them up on ebay for a few pounds. Pippa
Re: Antler chews Hello, We give our dogs antlers. The ones we buy are sold by pure dog and they are called 'stag bars' www.puredog.co.uk. A warning is given about supervising your dog and never to hold the antler for the dog to ensure they do not bear down too hard on them. Our dogs love them and will sit and happily chew on them. They have never splintered and last for ages despite our dogs being powerful chewers. They don't smell and don't leave slime marks everywhere. We bug a size large. Although for our dogs they are safe we never go out and leave them alone with them just in case. Also they love them so much one dog always wants the one that the other dog is chewing! They play with them as well throwing them up in the air and burying them under the vet bed before settling down to chew. It does depend on the dog though as I have heard of others chewing through them in no time at all! I agree with Pippa that rawhide makes the dogs sick so we don't buy these. The breeder we got our first dog from recommended venison ears (sold by Burns). Dogs absolutely love them and do not throw them back up. Unlike pigs ears they do not smell and are not slimy. These are available when the deer are culled, so the dogs are eagerly awaiting them to come back in stock.
