I was wondering what tricks people on here have taught they're dogs and how they managed to do so?

Holly searches the house and brings me my slippers when I come home.

We started with short fetches, then progressively moved them into the hall, then into another room and eventually upstairs. Over time I started to hide them. It's now become a bit of a party trick.

Right now, well for next Sunday, I've got to teach Charlie to cross his paws on cue. It's for clicker class homework. I taught him to target a small square of material with his right paw while lying down. Now I'm moving the square around and eventually (hopefully tomorrow) I'll move it to the other side of his left paw, then (hopefully) he'll cross his paws to put his right paw on it. Then I'll repeat that, put it on cue, and chop the square down. Then ask him to do it without the square and (hopefully) he will.

::) ::) ::) I don't enjoy tricks much. I find there is so much useful stuff to do instead...but it's good practice, of course.

I usually train tricks when I can see Maisie needs a bit more wearing out but I'm a bit too tired to make sure I'm training really well. So we train stuff that won't matter if either of us messes up a bit and if we are having a hard time with something and getting frustrated, eh, just do something different.

To that end, Maisie's current list of tricks is:
    - catching treats in her mouth (you wouldn't think this is a skill but lots of adult dogs can't do it!)
    - bow
    - finding a specific person: so far, we've only trained her to find my boyfriend when I ask "where's C?" But I want to extend it to some other people as well.
    - wait and find it - more of a game than anything but Maisie is put in a wait and I throw treats everywhere and she waits until I release her, then searches them out. I want to build this up to more difficult hiding and finding of treats
    - learning the names of her toys: so far she knows "ball" well enough to choose the ball over a bunch of other toys if asked, and we are now learning "find your shark"

    "Play dead"
on the command *bang*, or the firing of a small plastic gun

That's our party trick. Amazing what you can learn on YouTube :)

I haven't taught any "tricks" so far, but just because there it SO MUCH useful stuff I feel I want to teach that there's just no time! Right now with Willow, I'm working on a "hold" for a dummy and she's doing really well. I make it high arousal for her to make it fun and exciting - every now and then I'll break from it and throw the dummy or hide it and let her find it. Nothing too physical for now because she's still recovering from her spay, but it's lovely to see her enjoying her training.

She's also really good at choosing a particular toy when I ask for it. She knows "ball", "Mr Meerkat", "Santa", "sock sausage".

I have loved reading all the tricks youve taught your dogs, I believe it strengthens the bond we share with our dogs as well as giving them something to do however time consuming it is I think the final product is worth it :D
I've taught Max a fair few tricks, the latest one we're teaching is to "touch" the door to shut it and also teaching him to sit/lie under my legs as he gets nervous and hopefully that'll settle him down :)

    I have trained Charlie to:-

    1. Collect the post
    2. Get my keys
    3. Get my slippers
    4. Empty the washing machine
    5. Ring a bell to go outside and come back inside

    Clicker trained:-

    1. Four paws in a box
    2. Put 2 toys in a box

Jac, how do you teach 'play dead'?

Definitely strengthens the bond and gives him something to do  xx

I had fun this winter earning the Novice Teick Dog title with Simba. You had to teach 15 tricks to get it, there is a list of a whole bunch to choose from. Some of them are the basic stuff. We did:

    Sit
    Stay
    Come
    Bow
    Shake paw
    Wave
    Weave (between legs)
    Two feet on object
    Leave it
    Spin (right and left)
    Jump (over a low jump)
    Tunnel (ie agility tunnel)
    Sit pretty (beg)

Hmmm I forgot the rest...I had a thread about it all...

Did it all with clicker training. It was very fun! Since then have done 4 paws in a box, and I continue to work on fetch/retrieve although that's harder during the winter.

Helen, I couldn't find the video we used but it was a bit like this one
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsJllv4sQ-Y

We don't do it from standing, usually from a sit as its more gentle on the hips, and I think the original video did it from a stand.

Re: Any tricks you've taught your dog?

I've been using trick training to entertain Daisy this winter when the wind is howling too much to even think about going outside again! I'm so looking forward to some warm weather and being able to just pop outside without dressing like the Abominable Snowman!

Daisy has learned to shake (though it's more of a whack when she does it!), roll-over, spin, bow (well, we're working on that), and best of all, pick up her mess! She has a great time shredding boxes, then a great time picking up all the pieces in return for a piece of kibble. I tell her, "Pick it up!" and she trots off to find a piece of box to bring back for a trade. She tried to bring her toys at first, but now knows to ignore them (maybe that will be the next trick?).

I've been working on the "trick" of having her drop into a "down" in the midst of a recall. I'd like to be able to shout, "Down!" and have her drop in her tracks, wherever she is. I'm thinking about the nightmare scenario of dog chasing deer towards highway... That happened when we first moved to the farm and all I could do was hold my breath and pray that both dogs (at the time, Molly was about 5 and Dante (55 pound Husky/Lab mix) was about 8 yrs) made it across and back safely. The herd of deer outpaced them quickly, but the dogs still crossed the highway twice. Obviously, the recall was not great!

I like teaching tricks. I think they're fun for the dogs and strengthens that bond that means to much to all of us!

I thought, "wow, that's amazing!" and then quickly realised you weren't talking about that type of mess :D :D :D

I tried to teach Penny to cover her eyes, but it sort of ended up as a touch your nose hahaha

She can do a little bit of fancy heel work thanks to our Rally class, and I'm in the middle of teaching 'spin back' which is where she's facing you and then turns and backs up between your legs. At the moment she's knows the between my legs position and the spin but can't quite put together the whole routine yet!

And I'm planning on teaching the four paws in a box thing too.

Yeah Fiona, wouldn't that be nice! Except when she's got the runs, it could get really seriously disgusting!

The spin back sounds almost like what my old Molly would do to anyone she liked, only she'd go through your legs from back to front so her head would pop out between your knees. Was kind of problem when she did it when I was wearing a bathrobe, but worst was when she tried it on my tiny, short mother-in-law. Granny could almost ride Molly! Luckily for all concerned, Granny thought Molly was the sweetest dog around! (And she was right!)

Maybe I'll try the weave with Daisy...

Now I'm moving the square around and eventually (hopefully tomorrow) I'll move it to the other side of his left paw, then (hopefully) he'll cross his paws to put his right paw on it.

Sorry to deviate the thread a bit but just wondering how you,got on with this Julie? I started it with Dexter and I used a post it note.....when I got to this stage ( I was asking him to cross right over left ) he was adjusting his left leg to give himself space to still tap the post it note without crossing his paws ::) I need to go back to it but just wondered if you succeeded.....
