I left murphy and Ezra at my in laws last night for a few hours whilst we had Xmas dinner at my Nans who lives opposite. This morning Ezra had been sick and in the sick was some raisins/dried fruit. He wouldn't eat his breakfast and seemed wierd. I managed to get hold of the in laws and asked them what they gave them to eat other than the dinner I had left from them and they said nothing but carrots. And then I said had you put anything in the garden for the birds and they said Stollen! And Exra had kept disappearing off into the garden so we are putting 2 and 2 together. He has been to the vets and had a blood test and I have brought him home to wait for the results. We are hoping because he's been sick that he hasn't absorbed anything. Worst case is that he will have to be hospitalised for a few days and we were meant to be going down to salcombe in South Devon tomorrow for 5 days with the dogs :( argh. I am so annoyed with them!! Murphy seems absolutely fine so don't think he had any. argh fingers crossed he's ok!

Oh gosh! Hopefully the vomiting brought it all back up and he'll just be feeling a bit sorry for himself the next couple of days! Not what you need just before Christmas!

Phew luckily he threw it back up so his blood tests are clear and he hasn't absorbed anything. He's got 3 days of Zantac to protect his stomach and we've just got to keep a close eye on him in case anything changes. Phew! The in laws really don't understand that they could have killed both ez and murphy! He said "how was I to know they would eat it" even though it was on the floor of their garden!!!! Duh!

Glad everything is ok. I bet Ezra couldn't believe his luck when he found a tasty snack left for him outdoors. No wonder he kept nipping out.

There are strict rules in our house anything put out for the birds has to be where the dogs don't go. My two will eat anything. ::)

Fortunately Stollen doesn't have too many raisins in, but a dead scary time for you :(

Really glad he's ok!! How terribly stressful.

Putting food on the ground outside like that overnight is probably feeding rats more than anything else. Bread-like stuff is not a suitable food for birds either as it's too nutrient poor, unfortunately. So they're not really doing anyone any favours....

Last year...I knew about not feeding birds bread so when the patch of cliff I have (remote from the house, and surrounded by uncultivated ground along the coast) had been cleared of all the seed heads, etc. I decided I'd get some wire feeders and some "fat balls" for the birds.

Gosh, the rat population was grateful...nothing stopped those rats getting to the feeders - there are no trees, only large bushes, to hang them in and the rats just bought grappling hooks and crampons...

I think squirrels must like those fat balls too.

Tatze often digs them up on the green near us - they must have been buried by squirrels, I think. Luckily Tatze gives them to me rather than trying to eat them. Someone must put a lot out as we find at least one a day!

Found a huge, live rat in our worm farm the other week. I admit to making a high pitched noise that may have been described by some as a scream.... And then on the weekend I rat-proofed the worm farm...

    That's an unscream.

Yup, I did an unscream when I found a rat on a pumpkin in the veg garden.

A very intelligent young man from the council examined all the surrounding areas, "the runs", and informed me it was, most probably, a mouse. I informed him - in very unscream tones - that I bl**dy well knew the difference between a mouse and a rat. He decided I might be right....and would arrange the right traps asap...

I would most definitely unscream at a rat on a pumpkin. Or on any member of the curcurbit family.

I would most certainly make one of those high-pitched noises if I saw a rat anywhere near my environs....fortunately I live in rat-free Alberta... 8)

No rats? That's brill. London has lots of rats. As does the area of Cornwall I stay in.

    You have bears though.

We keep getting dead rats in our garden :( our neighbours are council tenants, nothing wrong with that in itself, but these people are the ones that make people look unfavourably on council tenants. They don't work and do not take care of their property at all. There have bee several complaints made about it. Recently the hedge that borders our gardens reached 12feet tall so I complained and they cut it down but obviously disturbed whatever was hiding in their scrapyard of a garden. My cat keeps bringing rats in from their garden :(
