Can anyone suggest a simple beginners gun dog book to help me with Charlie's retrieving as I would like to move on a little now. Don't get excited I am not going for lessons or anything it's just for fun and to keep Charlie happy, occupied and to work his brain. Thank you
Re: BEGINNERS Gun Dog Training Book I'd suggest the gundog trust books - they are the only ones I have bought that take you through things step by step. I've bought other books, and found them hopeless. They just tell you what your dog should do, not how to get them to do it. One book I got said something like "now steady up the pup by making him sit before allowing him to go for the retrieve on command. Once pup is steady....". What? What about the 3 months work (for us, anyway) required in between those two sentences?!?
Re: BEGINNERS Gun Dog Training Book I agree Helen. I have only got the Grade 3 book, but it is so clear and set up in such consecutive steps, it is really helpful. I am sure the others are the same.

Re: BEGINNERS Gun Dog Training Book Helen,it is really easy...it's like total recall,broken into steps and I've found the clicker excercises easy but I know you don't like the clicker.....I've got him picking it up and clearing the floor on 2 sessions and it's a proper dummy shaped toy...when I add duration tomorrow I might get brave and video us......I think I'm doing it right but I'd feel better about it if I knew I clicked right! X

X [/quote] Go on - it's a really positive thing to do. The best that can happen is everyone says "that's wonderful". But in a way, the worst that can happen is even better - I was much worse than I thought I was, and it wasn't fantastic to find that out. But I'm hugely better now because I did get lots of fabulous tips and worked hard taking them on board. And our delivery is now...er...I wouldn't say hot, but definitely bath water warm!

Re: BEGINNERS Gun Dog Training Book I have read Lez Grahams - The Pet Gundog which is very interesting, very easy to understand and basic for the beginner, just what I need : Thankfully we have been training pretty much the correct way, so now we are going to move on to all the different retrieves when Charlie is better. I bought mine for £14.99 at Watersones with free P&P, it was £21 on Amazon Has anyone else read it and how did you find it? x
