I will be picking up my 8 week old lab puppy very soon and am looking for recommendations on the best brand of food to feed her and should I be looking at grain or grain free foods?

Thanks to all for your responses,

The breeder will probably send you home with a package of the food puppy was weaned onto and is eating now. You should keep her on that food for at least a big bag, or longer. She will be facing a lot of changes in her little life, this is one thing you can keep constant for her. Some people even go so far as to bring some water from the breeder's place home with them.

Consider as well, you researched your breeder, the lines are healthy, the dogs look great, she must be doing something right and food is one of those things. :)

All kibble has a filler in it, some use grains, some use peas, potatoes, etc. However I have read a reason grain free is not appropriate for growing pups. It did not apply to me, I forget why. Maybe someone else can provide that information.

If you are in Canada or the U.S. I highly recommend the site linked below for researching dog food and making up your own mind about food. It teaches you how to read labels and what ingredients really are. Keep in mind, the food that is best is the food that works for your dog, usually.

When do you get puppy? You must be finding it hard to sleep, waiting for that special day is so hard. Welcome to the board.

Hi Wayne - this is a bit of a nightmare topic - everyone has their own opinions.
In the UK we often recommend http://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

What suits some, doesn't suit others.
I agree with Snowshoe, stick with what the breeder is using for starters if you can, and think about changing if needed once your puppy is settled and eating/drinking/pooing all fine.

Best advice is to feed the best quality food that is within your budget that your dog likes.
    Lots of help!
