Holly has the squirts again and this time it hasn’t gone away in 24 hours. I’ve treated her for giardia.. just in case, and now I am considering changing her diet (currently on Orijen). Right now I am feeding her chicken and plain boiled rice, but once we’re over this episode I want to put her back on dry food. If any of you have experience of any of the feeds that are for sensitive guts I would love to hear your views, cheers.

Lincoln has a sensitive tummy. When we first got him he was eating Purina but I wanted a better food so I went with Victor Pet Food. It's one of the best. He was eating it for a month but kept getting diarrhea. I put him on Purina Pro Plan Sport 30/20 and overnight his stool was solid and well formed. So that's what we feed. It works for us.

Hi our Isla has a sensitive tum, especially problematic with treats other than her regular food.

We feed her on James wellbeloved fish or turkey only and she has solid poos

Thanks all. Holly is staying overnight at vets tonight as she vomited all night and was passing blood this morning. Feeling very worried, but keeping fingers crossed that all will be ok. I’ve ordered some Purina HA to try her on once she’s back. Looks like we’re in for another round of metronidazole. No idea what has happened to her; either IBD or she has picked up something very horrible while scavenging.

Oh my. I hope she feels better soon. Purina HA is excellent. We had to use that for our Airedale who had digestive issues and it works great.

Hi @Holly Chocolate Loveheart - sorry to hear your little one is under the weather. We had a really similar experience, and had to go through a few rounds of treatment for Giardia and secondary infections due to a low immune system. It's really worrying especially when they have to stay overnight at the vets. Our little one was overnight for 5 nights in a row due to a really nasty bout of colitis and enteritis. She's definitely in the best place though, and they'll also be able to manage cleaning her after the squirts and making sure she's monitored all the time.

It took about 2 months after all the treatment for Luna's tummy to settle - the slightest change to food (even a piece of cheese for training) would set her back. It meant trying to train with just Kibble (which was a bit tricky at class when the person next to you had delicious sausage for their dog) but we've gradually got her onto foods that seem to work for her tummy. We've learnt that turkey and chicken give her the raging farts and softer poos so tend to avoid this. Adding yoghurt, baked pumpkin or banana into her food has also really helped. Her coat is really shiny now too. I think it just takes time and a bit of trial and error.

Let us know how Holly is.....

I’m starting to think it could be IBD, previously I thought it couldn’t be because she was having alternating bouts of 24 hour diarrhoea and two weeks of normal and she was always very well with it, but now the usual 24 hour diarrhoea stretched to 3 days and then last night and today was awful. She has no temperature, not sure if she would have a high temp if it was infective. I’ve ordered the Hypoallergenic food and will have her home tomorrow.

If it is colitis, aside from diet what else can I do for her? I felt very guilty leaving her at the vet.
    Thanks all xxx

You vet will get the drugs side sorted out but I've found a low fat diet the best for Them. He's got certain foods which make him react badly like chicken which I now don't feed or eggs. He has a good kibble, treats and all the stuff you would normally give as treat except I avoid stuff like cheese or anything fatty.
Stress can be a factor when my old dog died he had a colitis attack.
I can tell when his tummy hurts he acts stressed and is not his normal self. His behaviour gets a bit ott. He tries to eat grass and clearly not happy. Hes never had a temprature and is not always sick but he does get an explosive bottom and bleeding from the bottom. We have when he was really ill used steroids with the anti biotics to help him but now if he has a attack I catch it so quickly change him over to bland boiled white skinless and boneless fish I usually avoid drugs and vets. It's very manageable he's well fed and happy and the only flare he's had recently is when my dog died in April and when he was given anti inflammatorys for an injury. He can't tolerate anti inflammatorys at all and we do not use them.
Once you understand what's sets him/her off its very esay to manage and the behaviour changes pre attack is a good tell.
Finding what's best for them to eat is half the battle I avoid chicken and fillers like grain and he's fine. He's a good weight and super fit.
Best wishes from me and Rory

Thanks.. Holly came home today, feeling a bit sad but ok overall. She’s on metronidazole for a week and on a hypoallergenic food which I will keep her on until we’ve established better gut health.. I was considering whether I should introduce probiotics at some point, once we’re past this crisis. I got some Yu Digest but only gave it to her once, not sure if it contributed to her condition.
Anyway, we’re taking it nice and easy for now xx

I've used yudigest it did help but the also do a little packet of stuff you put on their food. That helped too but I do use pro fibre which helps slow his bowel down. Pro kolin helps too.

Thanks. The B12 and folate results came back today and are low so she has not been absorbing her food. We started the hypoallergenic food and I started Yu Digest. Got 4 more days of metronidazole then we are drug free and aiming for diet control ..
just need to stop her eating rubbish and other animals’ poop when we are out

Are there any good home remedies for treating diarrhea? My pup has it right now. He’s acting fine and everything. Perfectly normal but just has runny poops. I read white rice helps. Any advice would be great...

We just went through this with our Yorkie. I fed him boiled white rice and ground turkey with a tsp of can pumpkin (100%) . When his stool was normal I gradually started adding his kibble back in. He's fine now.

Thanks Jade. How long did it take for your pup to get back to normal? It’s been a day and a half of this now. Still acting normal but just has the runs every few hours.
