Charlie came to us from the breeder at 8 weeks eating 3 meals a day of Harringtons puppy complete. He didn't seem to like it very much so I mixed a little water in it to soften and now he eats more but never the full daily recommended amount on the packet. Consequently I am considering slowly changing it over to a different brand. Can anyone recommend a good quality puppy food and could you tell me the pros and cons of dry food vs canned meats etc. Dry food seems easier but if he doesn't eat it then maybe I should change. Incidently when I made him rice and chicken for his poorly tummy, it was warm and he absolutely wolfed it down!

Hiya. When we got Harley she didn't like the food that she was on at the breeders. She also had a poorly tummy for several days. We changed and tried several different foods. We were then given a complimentary bag of Royal Canin for sensitive stomachs and lo and behold, she wolfed it down. This also settled her tummy so we have stuck with it. Our neighbour had the same problem so we gave them some of Harley's food, and just like Harley, he wolfed it down.
It may not be the best out of all the food out there, but it us what Harley likes so we have stuck with it. :)

I think by the sounds of it Royal Canin and Burns are both pretty popular on this site (at least, those people that post on this site seem to mention it a lot).
I have used a few different foods, currently one by Eden Pet Foods which is a UK sourced food similar to Orijin but without quite such a steep price tag.
I would recommend setting a budget then looking at this website

Then...if you are like me, still be thinking about it 6 months later

It's so difficult, but you could look at CSJ they make their own food and very reasonably priced and they do a Puppy food for £20 for 15kg bag. I am thinking of changing to this brand for my 2 dogs as it really doesn't seem to be any different to the more pricey brands. I am pretty sure there are some forum members that use or have uses it. Worth a look :)

Thanks for the suggestions...the vet recommended Hills but just been looking at it and it really pricey. Does anyone who's had dogs for a long time know if the quality of the food makes any difference health wise in the long term (diabetes etc) or is it just pot luck if your dog is healthy?

I don't mind spending the money on him if it means he's healthier but if they are all the same sort of content then obviously it would be more sensible to go for the cheaper options!

    Hi Emma,
Dexters our first dog and he has a sensitive tummy so after a couple of months of truly awful soft poos I changed him over from the breeders choice Eukanuba to Royal Canin gastro intestinal...first the puppy, now the adult and he's been great on it.he gets a couple of squeezes of My Beau supplement on it too.
I read the varied diets of some of the other dogs with envy( bet Dexter would too if he could ::)) but I know anything off menu causes soft poos and I'm truly terrified about raw in case I didn't give him the right nutrients or he choked on a bone...which I know is silly but that's how I am about it :-\ x

Our club just had a lecture on feeding and what is in the various dog foods... Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but last Sunday they were all talking about it. Apparently a lot of the big names (RC, Hills among others) use a lot of corn (maize), and this can have a really bad effect on some dogs, and can make hyperactivity worse. And they have a whole shed load of chemicals etc thrown in for good measure.

I think (but this is just my own opinion, I don't have a lot of experience to back it up) that it is worth really shopping around to find a food that you trust and your dog does well on. If you can find one of the small local dog food producers who use 50% meat in their kibble and no artificial preservatives etc, then it is worth it. The one we now buy (which is made and sold locally in the South West) is actually cheaper than Hills.

I feed kibble in the morning, and raw in the evening. It works well for us.
