we get our little girl saturday she will be exactly 8 weeks, i have already looked into puppy training classes for once she has had her vacinations and i am going to watch one tonight to see if i like the class and trainer. she uses clicker training which i have never used in the past. just wondering what the best treats are? i assume maybe cooked chicken? dont want to use ccommecial treats and then upset her tummy? any ideas be great.a
Re: best treats to use for clicker training I would just use her own food, taken out of her daily food ration, so she does not gain any weight from using too many treats
Re: best treats to use for clicker training It might depend on how good the rewards need to be depending on how difficult the exercise or whether you have distractions (you shouldn't while clicker training, but you will have in puppy class). I started with kibble, and it was fine but moved onto higher value treats quite quickly. I needed the big guns of cheese and chicken in puppy class to keep his attention. Frankfurters were good but made him very thirsty so I stopped those, concerned about the salt levels. Recently, I moved on to his favourite hard biscuits, but they take him too long to eat, which slows down the speed of the clicker training (not a good thing). So I'm going back to chicken. If you are really OCD about these things (as I am) it is possible to look up the calorie content of the food you use and work out the weight conversion to chicken, so you know how much to food to deduct. For the food I use it's 1.5:1 for chicken with no fat and skin.
