I don't know much about bitches only ever having had dogs.

I was wondering can a bitch have more than 2 seasons a year?

The rottweiller bitches we walk with were both in season in December but since last Thursday one in particular has been showing signs of coming into season. She's being stroppy and hard work and Scott is taking far too much interest in her and whinging if hes not allowed near which is usually a sure sign.

I thought they only had 2 seasons a year. I'm hoping this is just a short blip. It gets hard work with my two when the rotties are in season. :(

    Thanks Kate

I'll keep my fingers crossed its just one of them so temptation will only last 3 weeks. They usually overlap by a week so it usually lasts 5 my two go mental and so do I. ;)

Yes they can have more than two a year, or less even. A 6 monthly cycle is just an average and many dogs cycle 4 monthly or even just once a year. Some bitches have Split Seasons too, which can send hormones all over the place.

The other thing to bear in mind is that a bitch with Anal Gland problems, Womb Infections or UTIs can give off the smell of a bitch in heat, even when she isn't, so it's definitely something to get checked out, especially if she is grumpier than usual, as this could be pain/discomfort related rather than hormonal.

Yes it's pretty much the same as with human females - each dogs cycle is different.

When I worke in kennels I had a GSD that would come into season every three months which made finding the right time to Spey her pretty much impossible!
My mums dog was due in season nearly two months ago if you by the norm of every six months but she is showing no signs of coming in any time soon.
