Has anyone experienced this? My dog is passing black poo, but only the outside is black and inside is a normal brown colour. Apologies for the gross topic.

Black poo often means blood in the stool, so it might be worth getting it tested. The only time mine have black poo is when they've eaten a lot of wild boar poo, which is very dark - but then it's the same colour throughout.

Did you feed liver? It makes the poo black. But yes, as above, it could mean blood - if you suspect it is blood, you must seek vet help. Black blood means bleeding high up the intestines, and it is not a good sign. Hope it’s nothing sinister. Let us know what you find out.

Have you given your dog anything special to settle her tummy lately? Medications containing charcoal and some other anti-diarrehea meds, even if they are a white liquid, can turn poo black. Also some biscuits have charcoal in them which can do the same. But generally that would be the whole poo, not just the outside. I agree with the others, worth consulting a vet just to be safe.

If your dog is it's normal happy self I would wait and see what the next few poos are like, but if it continues or your dog seems a bit down and lacking in energy, perhaps a phone call to your vet for advice tomorrow.
