    Hi
Jake is 11 months old and last night when he did his business there was bright red blood in it and it was a little like diarrhoea. I've given him a dual wormer that does worms and tics to try and rule that out. He is still eating but sometimes struggling to do a poo. Could the blood be present because he's straining to go but can't or could it be something more serious, he seems fine in himself other than diarrhoea and constipation.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Sue, I think you should probably run this past a vet.
Medically though, if the blood is mixed in with stool, particularly if it is loose, I would be more concerned - particularly if Jake was upset, seemed sore, was off food etc.
If its bright red on the outside of the stool I might wonder if it has come from the anus - in humans a small tear due to a large constipated stool COULD cause this. But I am not a vet, and don't know whether the same would be the case.
I would definitely keep my eyes peeled if I were you, and keep a note of any more blood, and the consistency of stool.
If you are worried, a vet is a definite.

    Hi
Thanks for advice. Jake has just been the toilet and it was a bit runny but he didn't struggle to go and no blood present. I will see how he goes tomorrow and if any blood present I will get him to the vets. He's not off his food or anything, he is his normal self in every way apart from blood in stools.

I would definitely take him to the vets if he has any more blood in his stools. It is better to be safe ;). Hope he is ok and his tummy settles soon x

    Hi
I'm glad to report that Jake is managing to poop ok now, has had three since last night and not a trace of blood. I'm so glad this has resolved itself but I will be keeping a close eye on Jake over the next couple of days, just to be sure.

My puppy had bloody diarrhea and the vet told me to hold food a whole day (not so easy with a Lab)! He said the stomach is irratated and needs to rest..Sure enough, 24 hours later she was fine.
