Hi guys... I noticed today that when i"m standing behind Bob and he's trotting away from me he does so with his body at a bit of an angle. It's like his back is twisted slightly... is this normal for labs? Or should his back be in a completely straight line?

Difficult one to explain really.. maybe I should try and video him???

If you mean a slight angle I think lots of people see that including me. I think labs have quite a long stride and it just pops his back foot in between his two front feet rather than catching on them. If you mean more than that it might be a little strange.....

Can you take a short video to show us perhaps?

I would say it is only a slight angle so I do wonder now if it's to stop himself tripping over his front feet when he runs. It would make total sense as he is very long - everyone comments on it. I'll try and get a video of him next time I'm out and I've got my phone with me.

    Thank you!

Dogs that have a short body (like Labradors) tend to do this to stop the back feet clipping the front ones. As Barbara said, their stride is long...relative to the length of their body. :)

I've spent longer than is sensible videoing and watching videos of labrador gaits. ::). My dog had sugery on his knee so I constantly watch for oddities, and educated myself about what was normal. Plus spent hours in the company of doggy physiotherapists, trotting my dog up and down... ::)

Lots of labs do as you describe. (my dog doesn't, but he has a back that is too long - although perhaps consequently, he has a very fluid, straight action).

I haven't noticed that in my puppy yet but my black lab/golden cross when I was younger DEFINITELY walked with a sideways slant and her hips and everything were fine. Haha. Thanks for this topic, it made me remember fondly how she would walk with that slant. Looked silly but got the job done.

    It's definitely not a hip problem :)

Riley is "bum right" too. Obi spaniel is just a white furry blur, his bum is completely out of control ;D

My lab does this, its just her normal gait. Off lead free-running she swings to the right, in harness she swings to the left.
