Hi, we are considering breeding with one of our labrador retrievers dogs who will be 8 in May and would like some guidance please. To begin with are they too old to be considered for breeding? They are about to go for their annual check up, is there anything we should ask the vet to check specifically for breeding? If it looks as though we could breed with them, where would be a good place to start in terms of contact/addresses etc We have their pedigree certificates Many thanks
Re: Breeding Hi there Welcome to the forum! I assume you are thinking of offering a male dog as a stud? There is an article here that might help: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/so-you-want-your-labrador-to-be-a-stud-dog/
Re: Breeding Hello and welcome! If it's a bitch I would think she is too old; somewhere in my mind I am thinking you maybe wouldn't breed after 4 years old. However, I am no expert and I am sure there will be others who will advise you on the forum. You perhaps could take concerns to your vet.
Re: Breeding My vet proclaimed my last dog 'officially a geriatric' at 9 years of age, even though he was still in wonderful condition and looked terrific and had no issues whatsoever. So, I would think that 8 is too old for a female to have a litter. If a male, though, no not too late Welcome to the forum!
Re: Breeding Our dogs mother was 6 when she had her one and only litter and she was considered old for a first litter. Has your dog had the relevant health tests done? Health tests are very important to ensure hereditary issues aren't passed on so I would ask my vet about them - hip and elbow scoring and eye tests off the top of my head. I'm not sure if the list has got any longer for labs. I'll check later and repost if it has.
