Hi, Maisie had Advocate applied about an hour and half ago at the vets and has just been sick. Can advocate cause a dog to be sick?

I don't know. I have heard it can. When I asked my vet about this, or other reactions, she said it was very unlikely. Be interested to hear other views.

Thanks Julie. She's just been sick again :( Seems a bit of a coincidence. I can't find any good info on line.

The best place to look for this sort of information is to go on the NOAH website (National Office of Animal Health), click on "Compendium" then enter the medicine you are interested in to the "search" box. This will bring you up the official datasheet of the product, including contra-indications and warnings of possible adverse effects.

For Advocate, vomiting is described as a rare adverse event, occurring in between 1 and 10 animals per 10 000 treated. This is described as self-limiting with no treatment required.

If it carries on, a quick call back to your vet will be in order.

Thanks Lochan, that's a useful site to know about. I'll keep an eye on her and call the vet later is she's still unwell (now fast asleep!)

    Many thanks.

Sick again . Vet has advised to keep an eye on her and take her in tomorrow morning if still unwell.

Lady was never physically sick with Advocate, but when she was a puppy she used to pant a lot as if she was going to be sick about maybe an hour or so after an application. It doesn't happen any more so she seems to have got used to the Advocate as she's got older.

Sorry to hear Maisie is unwell Debs. It's very hot and muggy over my way, do you think the heat hasn't helped? Hope she settles down tonight. :)

Thanks guys, she's not been sick again, but has slept for most of the afternoon. I've given her a small portion of food (as suggested by the vet) and she looked at me as if I to say "where's the rest"!! Now fast asleep again. No idea if this sickness is a coincidence, the weather or something else. Hoping it's just one of those things and not a reaction to the Advocate!

My OH is convinced Advocate makes Charlie sick, but I'm not. Charlie was poorly at Christmas (a bug) then we had a strange bout of vomiting last month (sorted by changing food). Each time it was within a few days of giving advocate. The thing is, since it's a monthly treatment, the chance of something happening quite close to an advocate treatment application is not all that low.

I see what you mean Julie, and you will probably never find out! Have a dog is as bad as having kids!!!! As Maisie was sick so soon after the treatment, it will be interesting to see what happens when I do it next month!

I am quite sure as Lilly gets older she is more likely to get a bit upset by the wormers (we use Drontal). Either a little bit sick, or a bit loose. Never bad enough for us to actually change it. Usually 48 hrs after getting them.
I do hope she is settled this evening.

Unless it was absolutely necessary I would not put chemicals into my dog's body!
