Hiya, Have been looking for a puppy book but just wondered if any of you had a favourite? Basically I just want something to read that's about everything puppy wise. Thanks guys
Re: Can anyone recommend a general all round puppy book pls? If you want a focus on gundog stuff, the right start from the gundog trust is good. More generally, I read Ian Dunbar's before and after getting your puppy, which I thought was great. It's very structured, advising you to keep records, do homework, and count how many hours your puppy does what. This suited me, very much. I also read Gwendoline Bailey's a perfect puppy, the early months were pretty much the same as Ian Dunbar's advice. It's an easier read, the advice is more relaxed both in style and substance (bullet point reminders, but no check lists or forms to fill in). So Ian Dunbar tells you to call in a professional if you (you stupid new owner, because it's your fault not the pup's) allow more than 2 accidents in the house, Gwen says well, a few accidents are to be expected but best avoided of course. I have to say, taken with a little pinch of salt over the forms, Ian Dunbar was the best for me - it depends on what you like in terms of style.

[/quote] I gave my twelve-year-old the Gwendoline Bailey 'Perfect Puppy' book as a birthday present and as part of our puppy prep. She loved it! Can't remember how old your children are, but even if they are younger, this would be a good one for them to dip into with you and get them involved too. Even if they cannot read much themselves, it is full of colour photos they'll like! It's all about growth / expectations and fairly light on any training... even if you are not going gundog, Pippa's Right Start contains good advice applicable for all puppies. Clare

Re: Can anyone recommend a general all round puppy book pls? well if pippas puppy book is as good as the total recall book you will be onto a winner took me a long time to digest the total recall, once we got it together we was onto a winner,......i will definitely recommend any of pippas books waiting for the new one how to train the owner of a puppy

Whilst i realise that the gundog puppy book looks very serious it is by far the best puppy book i've ever read. it' such a shame that it's not available in the shops (might do with a wee proof read first - stationery and stationary and possessive apostrophes . i'm a pedant :-[).

Me too I proof read technical docs for a couple of colleagues and I usually need a red pen. They hate it and love it at the same time I usually find plenty especially as my good friend writes as he speaks which can be like a stream of conciousness. It's usually positive in the end though. It's one of the reasons I find writing on here with the iPad or phone frustrating - stupid autocorrect!
