Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on why my 13 1/2 year old lab can't seem to lift her head, she was fine last night, not eating much but drinking a lot, she is on 4 tramadol a day to help hips and arthritis. She is barely able to lift in to her water bowl then just flops it down

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Tina

How worrying for you! I don't have enough experience to say - perhaps you should take her to a vet? It doesn't sound normal, particularly if she has never done it before.

Hi Tina , I would definately get her to the Vet , it could be arthritis setting into the upper spine/neck region, good luck and I hope you can get some help for her :(

Go to the vet soon as you can.

Are her ears and paws cold? Are her gums a healthy pink or do they look pale? What's her breathing like?

Her paws and ears aren't cold, her gums look a dark pink and her breathing is normal,
She hasn't moved much only out for a wee , quite heart breaking

That is good about her gums etc :) I was thinking about an internal hemorrhage and blood loss, but all sounds normal.

If she has been on that dose of Tramadol for a while and this is the first time she has shown these symptoms then it's probably not the medication. But I am just a dog owner - not a vet. Personally, I would take her to the vet. A lack of interest in food is the clincher for me. That would always prompt me to get my dog to the vet.

Fingers crossed for your girl. I am sure that you are worried and very stressed. Thinking of you here!

    Hi,
I took her to the vet who suspects it's arthritis spreading and advised us to increase her Tramadol to 4 a day from 2 a day and if she doesn't improve in 48 hours bring her back , but today she seems to be a bit better ,up and walking around a lot more, so because of her age I think it's just enjoy her while I have her and take 1 day at a time , god I love my girl so much

O Tina, love! Give her hugs and love while you have her - and fingers crossed you have her a while longer yet. Breaks my heart already to think of Charlie getting old, but it's just the way of the world that they have less time than we do. Hugs to you xxx

Really glad that she is a little better today. :)

When I had an old doggie I found that it was really important to keep him warm at night. He wore a coat every night, even in the summer (and he slept inside).

Give your girl lots of cuddles and kisses. Take lots of photos. I'm sure she knows how deeply she is loved.

    Hi Tina,

Sending you support from here too. It's so hard to see them getting old!! Just lost my senior Border Collie last fall (he was 16). Glad to hear it sounds like she's feeling a bit better - keep us updated!

Hi Tina , this was my first thought, having had an old timer with arthritis .
Just cherish her and take each day as it comes , its tough when our friends are getting old faster than we are , bless your girl x

Re: Can t lift her head

Hi, thank u all for ur kind words during this hard time, she was on 4 x 25mg tramadol a day and then 2 x 50mg a day because I was having trouble getting her to take her tablets and then when I took her too the vet at the other day she has upped her dosage to 200mg a day 4x50mg ( hope that makes sense), she doesn't seem to be in pain, having said that she just sleeps an awful lot . Her walk is very slow and she can't stand to drink her water, the only way I can get her to eat is too hand feed her which I am not moaning about as I would do it over & over as long as it brings comfort to her. I m just starting to wonder if she is just existing and not living. the vet said we should try a larger dose of tamadol otherwise we will have to go down the road of putting her to sleep. I think it would be a bit easier to accept if she went in her sleep rather than having to take her to put her to sleep, so please oh dear God work ur magic and if u can't make her better , don't let her suffer.

Oh Tina, I wish I could give you a big hug. Truly, it is the hardest thing to be faced with.

If you don't think that your girl is in pain and she can eat, drink and toilet (even if it's with help) then maybe just see how she goes. Also, I wonder if there are other pain medications? I'm wondering if the Tramadol is having a sedative effect....

If it does happen to be that you need to make the decision to put her to sleep, would the vet come to your house? I am sorry to be getting ahead of things here, but have a think about what you would want. Last year I had to put my old dog to sleep. It happened at an emergency hospital because he had collapsed. But we brought him home and laid him on his bed for the night and buried him in the garden the next day. That's how we wanted it, and I'm really glad we got to do that.

Thinking of you and sending hugs.

Tina, love. I have no experience or insight to offer - but sending you the warmest wishes and feelings from someone who loves a dog very much too. I'm sure you'll choose what is best for your girl. Hugs. Xxx
