I returned this afternoon after about 1 1/2 hours and Charlie had been sick on my new rug in the hall and a runny poo on the landing rug and sick in the kitchen. My eldest son said Charlie woke him up at 4.00 am this morning ringing his bell to go outside, Sean was just about to get up when Charlie was crying outside his bedroom, he just about got down to open the door, Charlie shot out poor boy. Charlie has been in and out all day to the garden :'( He is drinking so that's good and seems happy enough in himself.

So chicken and rice tonight, but could anyone advise how much? He is a big lad and usually has 500 grams of food per day.

Thank you for any help. xxx :'(

Oh no , another poorly dog, poor Charlie xx Give him about an adult sized portion of rice , make sure its really nice and wet so that he gets lots of moisture , will help to rehydrate him . Chicken wise , about as much as a quarter to a third of a chicken breast, if that makes sense , hope he better soon Helen xx

With an adult dog in good general health, I actually starve for 24 hours. It maybe an outdated idea, but I think maybe it gives the tummy time to settle.

Thanks Pippa, that's exactly what I do with sick children so Charlie can be treated the same :(.

Kate, thank you I will do as you say after the 24 hour period if he has stopped being ill.

    Thanks everyone. xx

Me too, Helen... and I do also look at it from the point of view that there is potentially less for me to clear up!
    Hope he is soon better.

Oh no! Sounds exactly like my Charlie just before Christmas. I did chicken and rice but stopped because he didn't keep anything down. Plus, the main ingredients in his kibble are chicken and rice. ::) In the end he didn't keep anything down for days. We had to get anti-bioctics, and once he kept those down we were on the up.

    Hoping he picks up soon.

Gosh, the number of dogs with this tummy upset lately!

I also starve any of my dogs for 24 hours in cases of tummy upset, plus I give them Pro-Kolin. I always keep a tube in the cupboard just in case. After 24 hours I feed something light and bland like chicken and rice.
Hope Charlie is better soon. :)

Oh poor Charlie! Hope he's not feeling too sorry for himself!!

Am I right in thinking it's your Charlie with the cruciate injury? If so is he on pain relief meds? I know that some, metacam in particular, can cause vomiting and diarrhoea even if they've previously been fine on it. Just a thought, might wanna ask your vet about it if the sickness and diarrhoea doesn't clear up.

Helen, it is a paste that contains probiotics and other ingredients which settles and soothes the intestines and stops diarrhoea fairly quickly. You can squeeze it directly into the dog's mouth. Available from your vets or pet shops or online. It doesn't require a prescription. :)

The pro kolin was great - I got it next day delivery online much cheaper than at the vet's - got the first tube from the vet but then bought online. Will order some more, I think...
