Hi Everyone, Ozzie is now 10 weeks old and has been doing really well, but has now taken to chewing everything in reach, including the door hinges, We have tried the 'NO' technique which used to work but now he just ignores us and carries on. Someone told us to spray it with lemon juice but unfortunately Ozzie seems to like the lemon juice and just licks it off So we have wiped it off because I'm not sure the lemon juice will be good for him. Yesterday he was in his crate with the door open and all his toys in there, and he decided to chew his vetbed and his crate to death! :-[ Can anyone help with how we can stop this from happening?
Re: Chewing Help The only advice I can offer is every time you see him go to chew something you don't want him to, give him something he is allowed. Frozen tea towels (wet) seem to be a big hit with teething :
Re: Chewing Help It sounds like he's teething so is looking for something to relieve himself with. Frozen kongs and frozen soaked tea towels are good. Does he have 'safe' items that he is allowed to chew, like puppy nylabones or puppy teething chews? If not it's definitely worth investing in some and then doing some training to teach him what is ok to chew and what's not. There are bitter apple sprays you can get that apparently deter chewing too but as you've found with the lemon juice, some dogs actually like the taste of it. I saw someone on the forum mention Tabasco sauce a while ago and I've also read somewhere about perfume. Not too sure the last too would be entirely a good idea though but it's up to you. I think you'd have more luck being super vigilant and teaching him things that he can chew - whenever you see him about to chew something you don't want him to say 'no' sternly or make an interrupting noise (I use 'ah!') and then immediately give him something he is allowed to chew.
Re: Chewing Help Rice bones will save your sanity!! ;D At about 10 weeks I started giving them to Maisie and then, at about 12 weeks I put them in the fridge to make them a bit harder and now freeze them!!! Also frozen carrots are good. I tried the bitter apple stuff, and she just licked it off : Also kongs with peanut butter smeared inside and then frozen.
Re: Chewing Help My boy was a big chewer, still is, given the chance. It has got better, and is slowly improving, so I have hope! He was definitely a lot worse when confined too much (he was injured for a period) and showed some signs of being anxious, but he was pretty dreadful when happy and relaxed too! I had him in a large mental pen and reduced his chewing opportunities on contraband. I gave him plenty of things that he was allowed to chew - frozen kongs, pizzles, ice cubes and so on. I didn't use bitter apple spray, as I'd have covere the whole house. But if he showed a particular interest in a chair leg etc I'd rub washing up liquid on it. His worse obsession ever was the lower door hinge on the kitchen door. A large quantity of washing up liquid solve that one. I gave up on the frozen tea towel thing - he could have them in a thousand bits in no time.
Re: Chewing Help Thanks everybody! We have frozen kongs which we have been putting Kibble and water in them, and he has nylabones and a teething type ring, but he would much rather chew the lower door hinge on the kitchen door, even when we say NO and take him away from it and give him a chewing toy he just drops it and goes straight back to the door Debs, I did see someone had mentioned rice bones before, this might sound stupid but I have just looked on lone where I can get some from and they all seem to be in packs of 35, 50, 70 etc. Is that the norm? I did see Pets at Home do them individually so I might pop there tomorrow. But on a lighter note he's just and his first bath, which was funny, because considering he's a lab and they love water, he hates the shower head and was trying to climb out the bath!
Re: Chewing Help We had a bit of house chewing, the skirting boards in Dexters room,i did use the bitter apple spray and it worked x

Then work up to blander, frozen ones.
Re: Chewing Help I was a cruel mum. I used chilli powder in washing up liquid and painted it on wood and metal items, and some plastic pots, that Lilly took a liking to chew. Sorry

Re: Chewing Help Rice bones have been a godsend for us. Sent husband to the pet store to get a few yesterday for emergency supplies. He picked up 20 much to the amusement of the guy working the til who actually asked if he was sure he wanted that many! That's us stocked up for the next few weeks. Highly recommended by our pup, Holly. 1 = 1 hour silence + one mucky pup when it's finished. White whiskers and paws but very content.

Re: Chewing Help Hi Everyone, Thanks very much for your help and advice, unfortunately we seem to have a puppy that pretty much likes the taste of everything, we tried Lemon juice he just licked it off, we tried washing up liquid again he just licked it off, so we resorted to Chilli Pepper, which he was not a big fan off, so hopefully this one will work And we are off to pet shop today to grab some rice bones, hopefully that will make one happy puppy and save our doors
