Today I was unfaithful to Riley, I went to my usual training class and handled Buzz, a chocolate labrador!!! We had fun but I was glad to get back to my boy and head out in the cooling, light rain :D

I quite agree, Merla. We'll be stood outside Heidrun's gate, shuffling guiltily, with cameras and autograph books, hoping for a glimpse or even a paw print.

It was certainly interesting handling a dog that had been kept in kennels and professionally trained for the first 16 months of his life. He runs VERY straight lines and has a VERY good stop :D he's also your classic waggy bum choccie boy who's confidence couldn't be dented with a sledgehammer ;D

Barbara, is it quite normal to handle other dogs in your class?

No Helen it's not but most of us only have one dog. Buzz was originally owned by our trainer, she was hoping to compete with him but he's not competition material and he struggled to be in a kennel with girls in season, he lost a lot of condition so she decided to find him a new home.
Jean(Crumpys owner) looked after him while the home search went on to get him out of the kennel, the first home didn't work out and Jean decided to keep him :)

All of this means he's a dog who's been handled and trained by a number of people and he's comfortable with that, he's pretty chilled and friendly.

When Jean knew I was still going to class to watch she very kindly offered me Buzz if I wanted, it was a very interesting experience....he's poles apart from Riley in temperament and his basic training is really, really solid.

Thanks for explaining Barbara. Buzz sounds delightful and a lucky boy to now live with Jean and the very gorgeous Crumpy :) x

It was interesting and strange. Riley's my first dog and I'm the only one who handles him really, others walk him but I do the vast majority of his training so all our errors and bad habits are down to me :)

The other people in my class leave their dogs in our trainer's kennels and the trainers do some work with the dogs while they're there.
