Re: Choke chains kill! I never used to until the day dear old Pebbles Dog jumped through an open window in our bungalow after being scared by a lightbulb exploding. Now, even though I don't like it, my dog wears her (comfy and well fitting, none choke nor half-choke) collar and tags 24/7
Re: Choke chains kill! This is just so upsetting and brings back memories of when Hattie & Charlie had an accident when playing, Charlie got his jaw caught under Hattie's collar and almost strangled her trying to free himself, David and I struggled for what seemed an age trying to free them, it was terrifying :'( :'( :'( PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T leave your dogs collars on in the house it's just not worth the risk :'( x
Re: Choke chains kill! Probably alright if only one dog in the household. It is when there are two and they can get caught up while playing.

I never leave collars on when the dogs are in the house.
My brother's lovely dog died when his collar caught on a fence :'( I use an easy walk harness - fastens to the lead at the front but no restriction round her neck. She wears no collar in the house. Here is a photo -
Re: Choke chains kill! The only problem with just using a harness is the ID tag, as I understand it you can be fined upto £5,000 fine for no ID tag I always put collars with ID tags on my dogs when out on a walk Beautiful picture x

It is when there are two and they can get caught up while playing.
I wouldn't risk it, dogs can get themselves caught on things you would never think of. I have heard of dogs being strangled by their collars whilst in their crates :'(. Also anything could happen when you are not home. There really is no need for a dog to wear a collar indoors. If there's the slightest risk it's a risk not worth taking x

Sorry I worry when I see dogs out all the time with no ID tags : x
Re: Choke chains kill! I agree, any collar can cause a tragic accident. Collars off here when home alone or if Riley's wrestling with my in-laws dog. Very sad
Re: Choke chains kill! I hear your concerns everyone but will continue to keep a collar on The DivaDog She is very nervous and has proved a flight risk .... will bolt at any sudden noise or frightening happening and run, run, run. I have weighed up the risks and just couldn't live with myself if she escaped or bolted with no identification clearly visible. That said, I have inspected our garden and her cage for any bits that she might get stuck on and she dislikes other dogs so would not get into close play. Nor does she go out of site so no branch or fence could snag her ..... all in all I feel in my heart I am doing what's best for her specific needs even though my head agrees with you all.
Re: Choke chains kill! As you have done, MMM, I think it's about assessing the specific risk with your dog. If a dog is a flight risk then having no collar is likely to be the bigger problem by far.
Re: Choke chains kill! Roz, totally understand your reasons for keeping The DivaDog's collar on for her own safety, bless her xxx
Re: Choke chains kill! In days of yore, dogs wore check/choke chains and my Collie/x loved hers so much it was never taken off and I even buried her in it :'(
Re: Choke chains kill! I leave Dexters collar on during the day ....but I'm going to start taking it off ,we always take it off if we go out or put him to bed for the night. I walk with my friend and her German shepherd who is the same age as Dexter, they play really hard and fast .He wears a harness that is quite badly fitting as my friend was told 'he will grow into it'.....it got tangled round Dexters back leg the other day and we got to them just as it pulled tight.....I just lifted Dexter up off his feet and held him tight while it was unravelled...heart stopping and we are both reasonably sensible people...how did we not predict that could happen? New rule now,no harnesses for hoolie time....I'm still walking Dexter wearing his but he's mostly on his collar now.....it gives me confidence for control for a cat/ lunge situation :-[ Boogie, how tragic about your Brothers dog :'(
Re: Choke chains kill! When Holly was a puppy we tried using a harness but she really doesn't like stepping into it. It would be nice to have one that she didn't have to step into, maybe front fastening or something that could be pulled over her head. There seem to be loads of different harnesses online - does anyone have any recommendations? For info: I still have the choke chain I used for my first dog in the 1970s. We used it for training Holly: We put it in a tin as a distraction rattle - it made a lovely noise !
