Had a stressful moment the other night! We had just come back from the dog park, which we have to drive to. We pulled up at our house, but a friend of mine had parked in the driveway as she was returning something to the garage she had borrowed. My hubby wanted to go to the hardware store across town, so he just pulled in front of the house for Simba and I to get out. As I'm letting the pooch out of the back of the van, I decided not to put the leash on the dog, something I always do, but it's just a few yards to the front door, and he's been so good at staying close - so I didn't. Argh. I let him out, and I know he would have been fine except that OH drove off right away.

Simba has always been interested in our vehicles. If I leave for a walk and OH leaves for work a few minutes later and drives by us, Simba is always VERY interested in the truck as it drives by. Or if we see a van that looks like mine when we are out and about, same thing. I always half- suspected that he would chase our vehicles as they left the cut-de-sac given half the chance, although he shows no interest in chasing cars generally.

But I wasn't thinking about any of that as I let him out of the van, of course. And my suspicion was confirmed as OH swung the van around and left, Simba hot on his heels (wheels?).... Of course I didn t have my whistle with me, which is pretty much the only hope I had of getting him to come back. Not sure that would have worked either. Off they go, disappearing around the corner, me in hot pursuit, yelling "Simbaaa......"

I'm frantically trying to phone my OH, but of course fumbling it every time so I can't get through, all I can imagine is the van with the dog (in the middle of the road) in hot pursuit...and the thing is, there are a couple stop signs and then some lights that OH would have to stop at, so Simba actually would have a chance of keeping up.

Meantime my friend has pulled up to explain that she's dropped the item back in the garage, so I'm trying to explain that I have to go find the pooch, when lo and behold what do I see but a figure appearing in the distance, a man holding onto the harness of a Labrador...

Just "so" happened that my vet friend was driving by at just the right time, and saw the pooch in hot pursuit of the van and managed to corral him somehow, not exactly sure how, I was so relieved to see him I didn't get all the details.

Definitely put that one in miracle category!!

Lordy! Simba! Gosh.....one day he'll give us all a heart attack with his antics. A useful reminder though - I nearly did the same with Charlie the other night "oh, he'll just trot to the front door" but then thought better of it....

Really pleased that you had a happy ending. Hope you're gradually recovering from the shock and terror. Xx

Oh my gosh, what a freaky, scary thing. So glad this ended well. Where did your heart end up, in your throat or did it sink to the pit of your stomach? Hope it's back where it should be too.

How scary Lisa! Glad it had a happy ending ☺ Thanks for sharing though as you've just convinced me to stop letting Ella trot from the car to the front door!

Thanks, all, it was awful watching him go around the corner and knowing he wasn't going to stop. And trying to make the stupid phone work!!! I couldn't get my password right to unlock it, couldn't hit the right numbers to dial...yeesh pretty much a nightmare! A few more grey hairs but all's well that ends well. Scoundrel is currently mooching peanuts off the OH so business as usual here

That's one of my recurring nightmares Lisa.....I'm in some kind of intangible trouble and need help but can't remember Chris's phone number....ridiculous dream I know! but I know exactly what that fumbling feels like ....only I bet it was magnified x 100 when you dog is heading down the road into traffic.....x

Glad Simba came to no harm, Lisa.

Can you not set-up speed dials on your mobile 'phone? One press of the speed-dial button and that's it, no need to worry about remembering numbers ;)

Has your heart stopped pounding yet ? Mine was as I was reading it. I'm so glad Simba got back safe and sound. At least he got a good run.

That thing with the phone and not getting the numbers right....totally a recurring nightmare I have too. How simply awful to experience it for real.

The speed dial suggestion is a good one!!
