    FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!!!

Okay, So I've gone to the city today 1 1/2 hours from home) to visit my sister, am staying overnight here tonight. Asked hubby to come home at lunch if he could to let dog out, etc. Which he did. Great, right?

    NOT!!

They get home after school, discover Mark has left the cupboard OPEN...and OF COURSE Simba has gotten into the COCOA POWDER which has been ripped open, stuff all over the floor.

    SERIOUSLY WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN.

Simba seems fine but of course we do not know exactly how much he ate, if any. The fact that there is still some on the floor tells me he didn't like it very much, so hopefully he only had a little and decided it wasn't very tasty. I told them to call our vet friend, he says basically at this point just have to wait and see.

I know hubs did NOT do this on purpose and Heaven knows I have left things open/out that Simba has got into to, but FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!!!!!!

Just got another text from Mark, he says vet had thoughts along the same lines as me, that since it was all over the place when they got home he likely didn't eat much as he didn't enjoy it.

    So....I'll keep you posted.

Not having as much fun as I thought I would....

Simba, you have gone too far! I hope he is ok. I can't imagine that he found it palatable.

Hope hubby is not too much in the doghouse!

Oh Lordy...here we go again,Simbas been a bit quiet on the food theft scene recently...it was too good to last....that shows though how totally efficient you are Lisa at keeping everything out of temptations way.
Cocoa powder is horribly dry and really quite bitter so he probably didn't like it,i bet it was quite a strange texture to him too.im sure he will be fine...but let us know how he goes and enjoy your trip with your sister x

Ok, I take that to mean that Mark is currently whimpering in the back of the kennel.

    Any wine handy...?

Oh dear, sympathies from fellow thief owner!

I would also think cocoa powder would be pretty horrible to eat. Here's hoping no long lasting effects.

Oh Simba here you go again!!
I'm quite positive he wasn't able to eat a lot of it though. Just try to eat one spoon of cocoa powder yourself. It sucks up all moisture in your mouth in a second and your hardly able to swallow it.

Simba… Do hope he is ok Lisa. And that you have calmed down just enough when you get home that hubby is in just enough trouble, but not too much..

    Hi Lisa,

Glad that Simba seems to be OK. Like the previous posters I suspect that the cocoa wasn't really very appealing and that he won't have eaten much (if any).

We all make mistakes. I'm sure that Mark won't have done this on purpose and is already feeling bad about it.

Seeing as you were out, and it would have taken Mark a long time to clean up all that cocoa powder properly... I think you can be fairly confident that the cupboard door will not be left open again. ;)

You just have to admire Simba's style though.

I hope Simba will be alright Lisa. I'm sure he will like you said if he'd liked it there'd be no evidence left.

Ive been trying to get through to the rest of the household for nearly 18 years not to leave things with in reach, not to leave cupboard doors open, not to leave anything on the floor they don't want licking or taking away by a very pleased with its find Labrador etc etc.

It hasn't sunk in yet !!!!!!!!

So the pooch has survived the night....very hyper, though, as the vet predicted. Mark only got a few hours sleep. A bit better this AM but Mark says still hyper. So. He'll be alone all day in the house...guess I'm going to have to come home early, which kinda sucks. My sister is not a big doggy fan, and my leaving early to go look after him is NOT going to endear him to her at all. What I'm reading online says that if the dog is still alive after 24 hours we've passed the crisis. Ack.

Oh Lisa I sympathise, Otis is also a terrible thief, he managed to get hold of a jar of red onion chutney to day its realy quite sweet, and he had a great time licking the jar out before I caught him, onions like cocoa arent good for dogs either, I really hope simba is okay, sounds like he didnt lap up much. You arent alone with this problem I promise you, I really do try and keep everything clear, but he will always find that one thing ! Maggie x

Simba would have to eat quite a bit of cocoa for it to be dangerous. I just can't imagine that he persisted with it. Chocolate is different as it's sweet but cocoa is pretty hard to swallow in powder form.

Hope you're feeling some small satisfaction that Mark is having to deal with Simba on a cocoa high ;)

Do you really need to come home early?

Well I have one of Sarah's friends checking in on him at lunch, so I stayed here in the city. Hopefully the house is still standing :p

Poor Mark, I do feel sorry for him. I know he didn't do it on purpose, just as easily could have been me. In fact I'm wracking my brain, wondering if it was perhaps me not seeing it before I left? I got the story second hand from Sarah, she said her dad left the cupboard open, but I'm not exactly sure now whether or not he came home at lunch.

Seriously. Poor dog doesn't have a chance living with us.... :-[

Lisa, Simba is as happy as Larry!!!!

Some dogs spend 24 hours a day plotting how to get food. Simba is one of those. It's very hard to be more vigilant than they are - we can only try.

Home now...dog snoring on his bed, all well, thank goodness. Feel sorry for Sarah trying to corral him last night as he was zooming around the yard at midnight, barking his head off........I guess he barked for two hours straight inside before that, staring out the window...also barked at the pillow on the floor...all this from a dog who rarely barks. Poor thing, I'm sure it was no fun for him as well.

Thanks for all your support, honestly this forum is such a lifesaver sometimes when you need to vent!! :)

And just for the record, it WAS hubby who left the cupboard open, it was after supper when he and Sarah left doe basketball practice that he got into it. :p

All cocoa powder and baking chocolate now removed from the kitchen....is downstairs in the basement on a high shelf in our pantry. ::)
