Hi guys, what is the best way to deal with a constipated dog? Bob was pooing blood last week and had such awful runs. Vet prescribed some probiotic paste and 10 days worth of antibiotics. He also said to feed the white diet (ie chicken & rice or fish & rice) until he was passing normal movements again.

Well.... WHAT movements?! He's not pooped since he started on the medication. It has been a full week now of no pooping. He must be bunged up. I'm really not sure what to do?! Do we carry on with the rice diet? Or shall I start mixing chicken and fish with a small amount of soaked kibble to try and get some liquid into him? He's not drinking an awful lot which probably isnt' helping either.

Anything else I can try? Poor dog has gone from one extreme to the other!

A week of not having a poo? Really? Back to the vet, I'd say...something might be compacted.

A day, or two, and I'd be suggesting slightly oily food, or soft bulk, but a week? Vet visit, I'd say.....

I would also be checking with the vet again

    Oh dear, poor Bob.
I assume he isn't upset by this or you would have said, but I agree, it has to be the vet.

    Lots of liquid is good.
And Lilly can recommend wind-fallen plums - very good at softening one's stools..........

Bloody hell! Thank good for insurance that's all I can say lol! Will give the vet a call in the morning.

I'm hoping one missed one in yhthe garden. Will have a proper look tomorrow morning and see. But there was nothing obvious when I checked the other day... X

Paraffin is a good antidote to constipation - you can soak cotton wool balls in the paraffin and get the dog to eat these (most Labradors will...). Paraffin is not digested so it has a lubricating effect right through the digestive system.

But in this case I would definitely be conferring with the vet before administering any home remedies.

    Hope he is ok.

Drjs@5, don't mention plums..... We have a large plum tree. My previous Labrador was a plum fiend. Enough said.
