    Hi everyone,

I am thinking of trying the couch to 5k programme to get me running again (when I was 17 I slipped a disc in my back and my fitness and weight has gone downhill since!). Anyway I was wondering whether as it is a gradual programme building the running up slowly, whether I could do it with Murphy who is 7 months old?

Look forward to hearing what you all think x

I plan do do that couch to 5k with puzzle, but when she is older and finished growing. I would suggest that you wait until he is a little older and when his joints have fully developed so not causing any stress on them whilst they are still growing.

Tried to do it with barley last year, but he was not intererested :p

Oh Frankie sorry about your back sounds very painful :( I personally think a dog as young as Murphy should not do any kind of running or jogging with you until he is fully grown and then there is no risk of damage to the joints and bones whilst he is still growing. Just my thoughts. Good luck with the exercising :)

I'd hold off on the running till he's a year old, but that isn't far away. :)

Sounds like a terrific plan :)

Soft sand and grass areas can reduce the impact for that sort of distance when your dog is a bit older.

Thanks everyone, I think I will wait until he is older. I thought that might be best but wanted to see what you all thought :) x

By which point you will be up you will be at the 5-10 k stage Frankie!good luck with it,starting to run from scratch is incredibly motivating as you can see improvement every time even if it's only an extra block....

Ooh exciting! I waited till mine were a year old and built them gradually, even though they were running about off lead for well over an hour by that time, ten minutes of on lead running with me really tired them. The gait is very different for then running next to you on lead, a sort of super fast trot/ bustle they don't use normally. With on lead running we started at just five minutes and I built them by five minutes every couple of weeks. Kept them at a max of five k for on lead runs until they were eighteen months old just to be on safe side, then built them again up to ten k. Ten k is probably the max i would run them on lead regularly, off lead galloping along seems much easier and more natural for them so we are building to quite long distances off lead. I treat them the same as me, soft surfaces as much as possible, rest days off 'human' running sessions every week and if we do a hard hilly run one day I make sure they dont do anything too hard on their joints the next day so they recover...and they get a big tasty treat after a long run too ( like me :). Enjoy and good luck with your training, good to hear from another dog runner on forum!
