Hi folks, We took out ever growing pup (5 months) to get her kennel cough vaccine at the weekend because from Wednesday she will be going to doggy daycare for one day a week (eek). Anyway, I've noticed that since then she's been having little coughs (like retching but no sick or fur- I assume this is a cough?). It's happening maybe 4 times a day so I don't think it's anything serious. Is this normal? I hadn't realised the controversy around the vaccine until after we'd had it done and as we really don't have a choice about doggy day care it was a necessity. I'm now a bit worried about it- what do you guys think? Thanks and Happy Nee Year all Lou
Probably a good idea to ring the vet and discuss the symptoms, particularly if she is due to start day care. How is she apart from the cough? Is she eating, drinking and toileting as normal?
Yes, everything else normal, she doesn't seem to mind the cough too much either- just gets on with whatever she was doing once she is done. I don't think it is that bad and I know my vet thinks I'm a hypochondriac by proxy so I don't want to call them if it's a normal side effect. I've read online that it can be and its nothing to worry about but I just wondered if this had happened to anyone on here. I do worry too much. If it persists or gets worse or if any behaviour changes I'll call the vet. L
That's why myself and most I know don't even give that vaccine. I'd only need it for boarding, not even the training facility asks for it. But here's an idea. Were you given any kind of understanding that it would definitely protect your pup? If so then if you need any meds for pup maybe your Vet or the vaccine company should pay for them. I hope you don't need anything though.
I would be calling the vet as I read somewhere that dogs can develop kennel cough after receiving the vaccine. Hyperchondriac owner or not its best to find out the cause of the coughing
I would call your vet - they will not mind a sensible question, which your very much is. My dog has a kennel cough vaccine every year, and has never displayed any side effects. Just to remind people of rule 3 please: Members disputing the efficacy of mainstream veterinary treatments need to support their claims in a reasonable manner.
Thanks all, I've only heard one cough today but we have to pop to the vet to pick up some more flea treatment tomorrow so will ask when there. It's useful to be sure I'm not just being over sensitive, thanks all. Eek, There are rules? I think I missed those (or have forgotten I read them). Will have a look for them now.
Homer had his kennel cough vaccine before going to puppy care. He was only a few months old. I remember him having a "bad cold" with a very snotty nose a few days afterwards. It cleared up after a day or two.
Aha, you mean this http://thelabradorforum.com/forum/i...8700-healthcare-posting-and-moderation-policy Fab, this is exactly why I love this forum so much (I'm a researcher by trade)
Jes72, Thanks for that. I'm hoping its a similar situation. How did you get on with day care? I'm a bit nervous, even though we've chosen the best we can find and met the staff...
