Maisie has quite a large split on one of her rear pads, just wondering what you would do about it, leave it or treat it somehow? Its not inflamed or sore looking.

Murphy has really cracked pads. Last time he was at the vets i got them to have a look but they werent worried and said its normal. I bought the mushers secret paw wax mentioned on another thread, but havent used it enough to see a difference. Im debating putting coconut oil on them but i am sure he will just lick it off. Anyway, i dont thnk it is a problem unless they become sore. :)

Just thinking back to when Sam had a broken nail removed , our Vet said to clean the area after walks using cooled boiled salt water , I used a shallow dish and just made him stand with the offending paw in it for a couple of minutes . Just keep an eye on it for any signs of infection, such as inflammation, feeling hot or puss , then it may need antibiotics , hope its better soon x

Hope it doesn't hurt her. She was feeling her paw a bit when we walked together wasn't she?

    Re: Cracked pad

Shadow cracked a paw the other day when we were out. I noticed blood on the snow so took a look and it was quite a deep crack. His pads are a lot drier than Willow's, which are really soft, so I've started putting Musher's Secret on them a lot more regularly, whereas before I was only doing it when there was salt on the roads. I think it must be the cold and very dry air we get here, so I'm hoping the Musher's Secret, plus making sure I dry his feet well after walks, may help. It didn't seem to bother him in the slightest, though. I put some betadine on it for a couple of days.

It's good for your hands, too - added bonus :)

You can buy it from Amazon.

Homer has had a few scrapes to his paws recently. Salt water will help keep infection away. We also have Hibiscrub. Which is an antiseptic ointment we clean his woulds with but I think mist of it gets licked off.
