So Maisie jumped at a hanging rope toy yesterday at my boyfriend's house and cracked one of her front canines clean in half! It's a baby tooth, but when we went to the vets today, they said it must come out as it's cracked down to the pulp and is a huge risk of infection which could damage her adult tooth. Since she's four months, they suggested we try to spay her at the same time (since she has to go under). The only reason we won't is if they don't have time for her on Wednesday or Thursday, they are trying to sort out the timing now. Yikes! What an expensive baby. Thankfully the vet did not charge for the visit today for looking at her tooth, which was quite nice. I hope they call me soon so I know what's happening. She has to go in pretty early in the morning and probably wouldn't have her operation until afternoon, so that will be a nerve wracking day for me. She'll be sedated in a kennel and as she is crate trained, she should be okay or at least not horrible. Not sure how she'll do with the plastic cone of shame and I'll probably have to miss classes the next day because I don't want to leave her crated with her cone on.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Poor lass. The tooth would hurt a lot and she'll feel much better to have it gone. Would be great if you can take a day or two off after...you will be much happier being with her.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Hope it all goes well and you can spend an extra couple days with Maisie....you'll both feel better for it. My Bella didn't mess with her incision after I had her home and we washed her itchy belly one time...so the cone only lasted her about an hour. : I did pay close attention to her actions...and did lots of "leave it" the first day. We had her done on Thursday, I picked her up Friday about noon and then we had the weekend home together. By Monday she was her regular little self none the changed for having been spayed. She was 4 and a half months at the time.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Oh, poor girl. Glad it will be sorted soon... My boy spent 6 weeks in a crate after major surgery with a cone on - it was a comfy cone. He wasn't bothered by the cone at all....I had done a lot of prep for him wearing it though. But you could do a far bit if you have a couple of days... Your leaving by JulieTandCharlie, on Flickr
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Poor girl ;( hope all goes well and her tooth doesn't hurt her too much over the next few days x
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Poor thing. That tooth would be very painful. She will feel much better after it's out. Milly needed a cone for a while after her spay but didn't need it after surgery on her leg. They are all different. Hope it all goes well for you. What a worry they can be. Lucky we love them so much.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay She seems to be fine, not expressing that she is in much pain, although I'm sure she'll be much happier when it's out! When it broke off, she didn't even pause in her playing or cry out (possibly surprised!). What a little trooper. I think I will be able to take the next days off, it will be either Wednesday or Thursday. I'll just email my profs and tell them my puppy had surgery, I am sure she will be a clingy little baby for awhile (I'm typing this as she is snuggled against me on the couch, so she is a clingy baby all the time!). Julie I looked at your post summarizing your experiences with the cones and it was very interesting. I'm not sure I can get a fancy comfy cone in time since at most it could arrive on Monday or Tuesday, although I could phone around the pet stores here to see if anyone sells them. I'll get a measuring tape to see what size would fit her. She is only 24 pounds right now so I'm not sure what size would be best. Sunsetpines it's nice to know someone else had their girl spayed a little "early". The vet said it was fine but I was a bit nervous that it was too early. She is just 4 calendar months old (on Wednesday) but the vet said since she is a big dog that it is alright. EDIT: My vet just called… apparently they might not be able to do her spay/extraction because for one they have no space for at least a week and two, apparently it's difficult work to take out puppy teeth as you could harm the adult tooth growing underneath. So they gave me a quote for them (if they do it) - $400 altogether, and then they've spoken to this other vet quite far out (about 30/40 minutes away… boyfriend has agreed to drive us no matter which one we go with though) who specializes in dentristy and also does spays, so they are getting a quote for me regarding what it would cost for her to do the tooth removal + spay, ugh, I expect it will be more than $400, just hoping it's not *that* much more (like if it were $1000, that would be very hard to swing). Also it could be on either the 18th, 19th, or 24th… poor baby having to have the tooth in for that long!
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay It's hard, isn't it... That tooth would be extremely painful - she is just hiding it. Still, it'd probably be worth waiting for the dental specialist....
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Ok they got back to me… it'll cost 770 for the spay and tooth, going with the dental specialist, next Friday. Bringing her to a pet store tmr to try on a soft collar they had to see if its big enough!
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay That's good - under $1000 is so much better than over!! After the op get them to give you some pain relief for her (due to the tooth extraction). Glad you don't have to wait more than a week.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Ah poor little thing, glad you've been able to get her booked in x
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay I am so glad there's only a day and a half left until the surgery… she is VERY SAD and restless these past few days, she is losing other teeth and teething like mad and I think her bad tooth is hurting her as she cries quite a lot and wanders around chewing like mad. I thought her cracked tooth was coming out today and phoned up the vets and everything and then it came out properly and I realized it was the front tooth nearest to her bad tooth that came out - oops! In my defence, it is difficult to see what is going on in a labrador puppies mouth when they do not want you to be looking! And I was a bit hopeful it came out on its own so I wouldn't have to pay the ridiculous surgery fee, but alas, nope. She keeps wanting to be awake earlier (7.30 a.m… urgh) and not wanting to sleep. She was up from 9.30-2 pm straight and has only just now settled in her crate (I tried crating her earlier after a walk + some training and play, which is normally fine for her, but she was NOT having it so I gave up). Blarggggghh and she has puppy class tonight, so that'll be interesting.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Oh, poor, poor girl. So glad it's not long to wait. You might skip puppy class? The tooth will be so painful for her. You are really to be congratulated for having it dealt with properly. From time to time we hear people say damage to puppy teeth doesn't matter - but it so does! Teeth are teeth, and the pain they cause when damaged is the same regardless! I hope you can keep her comfy until it's sorted...best of luck with it.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay Poor wee Maisie Sounds like she is in quite a bit of pain with it. Hope all goes well tomorrow.
Re: Cracked tooth plus possible spay They just phoned to tell me that they're charging me an additional $185 for a "case management fee". On top of charging me $770 for the operation. I asked what this covers as it seems quite high. Apparently just a visit with the vet before the operation (which I didn't ask for, they required it), something about reviewing her records (she barely has any - vaccinations, kennel cough, this tooth thing), and writing a report to my other vet. This is ludicrous and entirely awful that they sprung that on me the day before the surgery instead of adding it to their quote. Obviously they knew it would be a part of their fee, so why wait until now to add it? Especially as there's no way I can back out of the surgery since it's time sensitive to make sure she doesn't get an infection and is not in pain for more days. I should have shopped around more with different vets. I probably could have found another vet comfortable removing a baby tooth at a lower cost. I don't have this money. This is more than I paid for Maisie. It's a months worth of rent. I will be using my credit card, and basically this is stealing from Peter to pay Paul as I will have to start using my student line if credit to pay for everything a month sooner now. I shouldn't have gotten a dog right now financially I guess but as I'm going into a busy field it was my only time to be able to properly train a puppy.
