Hello, could you tell me how long Amy (11 weeks) tomorrow could be locked in her create for now? Have mostly left it open while I am out but she has found a few corners to nibble on. And at night time, how long could she be locked in? She is happy to go in and the door be shut.

    Hi Jade,

It is difficult to give a rule of thumb, because it depends a lot on the puppy's bladder capacity, and temperament. One of the reasons that some experts really dislike crates is because it is very easy to slip into the habit of leaving a dog in there for too long.

This is roughly what I do, though it will vary from puppy to puppy

    At night
I build up to seven hours if I can, by three months old. Then between 3 and 6 months I will go up to 8 hours if the dog seems comfortable.
Some dogs over six months old seem quite happy to do a nine hour stretch in a crate at night, and a good indicator of this is the dog that does not particularly want to get up and go out for a wee when you come downstairs in the morning. Other dogs will wet themselves if you leave them more than eight hours.

    During the day
As a general rule I would not leave a dog under six months old in a crate for more than four hours during the day, and except in exceptional circumstances, under three months old it would be a two hour maximum for me, and in practice it would rarely be this long.

A four month old puppy that can last six hours like Jasper is fairly exceptional.

A crate is not really an ideal substitute for a kennel, and I personally feel that a dog that is going to be left in a crate for more than four or five hours in a row on a regular basis might well be better off in a proper kennel with a run.

Thank you once again. We are planning on a kennel and a area for her in the garden. I was just asking as she seems to be thinking its ok to use the the kitchen as her toilet area. (not very often so maybe just me been paranoid and distracted with boys been home.)

I was also thinking more for the night time as she isn't left for long during the day.

hi pippa, i dont want any one to think i leave jasper every day for 6 hours, i am in the house most days, one day a week i need to leave for 6 hours, this is the day i left him for 6 hours and he was fine, he must have a good strong bladder as he as only once wet is bed, i didnt realise this was exceptional, i must be just very lucky as the toilet training took no effort what so ever, as you no he is my very first dog, i feel very blessed now, the thing that as took most of my effort as been biting/nipping/ mouthing and i seem to be getting there now, thank you

Hi Lynne, I didnt think that's what you meant, but sadly some people do leave their pups rather a long time in crates, so I felt I should mention that it isn't a good idea. :D
