So, after some to-ing and fro-ing between 4 vets, with the surgeon kindly breaking off his skiing to give his opinion (nice man), we are going ahead with the surgery next Monday. This means the steroids Charlie was taking for his ear have been discontinued, and his second ear consultation brought forward to this Friday so we can establish a programme for sore ear management during the recovery from surgery. So, op minus 5 days...then the day after, I pick him up, and drive him straight to greyfriars where he'll spend his initial recovery period. Oh gosh....what am I going to do without him? :'( But good, the road to recovery will have properly started.
Re: Cruciate and ears update Ah bless, good luck Charlie. I always think it's hard for us when our furry friends have to be away for us for ops etc.. He'll be in safe hands and be much better after op. Will be thinking of you Charlie and your mum. How long is his recovery period Julie.? Jen
Re: Cruciate and ears update I know, sooner it starts, sooner it's over. 4 months recovery. End of June we should be back to not quite normal, as we'll still be building up duration of exercise, but nearly normal.
Re: Cruciate and ears update Julie , You are such a good mum, to Charlie, he gets the best care, Otis and I send charlie licks and belly rubs, and hope everything goes smoothly when he has his op. You have got him in optimum health for it, well done Julie. We hope his ears start to heal to, and this dosent become a bigger problem . Maggie x

Re: Cruciate and ears update Oh blimey , thats crept up quickly Julie , take comfort that Charlie will be in great hands and wonderful care , I`m sure we are all with you in spirit
Re: Cruciate and ears update You will be so relieved when the op is over and done with; Greyfriars for recuperation sounds a splendid idea. I nearly had a nervous breakdown when my pup had an op and had to be confined for two months, would have loved a place like that. Will be thinking of you x
Re: Cruciate and ears update Julie you know I am so in agreement with him being at Greyfriars ,although I know you will miss him dreadfully .....I have seen your exceptional care first hand ,but the professionals can ensure there won't be any accidents that can set you back xxx wow!the date is booked ,so pleased ,what a mission you have been on to get him ready, and you have succeeded, even with curve balls like his poorly ears .I cannot wait to be inundated with photos of Charlie having fun EVERY DAY...there you go,with all the spare time you will have on your hands, that's what you can do,you can keep us all in Charlie photos ;D xxx
Re: Cruciate and ears update Well done Julie, almost there! Gosh, this has been quite a journey so far.. we are all with you in spirit. Good boy Charlie, and roll on summer! Maybe you'll bring Charlie to the West Witterings for the big beach party.. ;D
Re: Cruciate and ears update Thanks all, you have all been amazing. I've felt every day of it! Although it did get easier.
How long will he be at greyfriars initially?
6 to 8 weeks is the outline plan - that will take us to the first x-ray check that the bone has healed around the titanium plate. Although, it might be possible to have him at home for weekends before then, but I won't do that for at least the first 4 weeks. Thanks for saying you think I'm doing the right thing, Angela. Of course, I feel massively guilty at times. But I work, and I need to go work hard for a bit which means I wouldn't have so much time with him, plus it's so difficult to keep them quiet for extended periods in a busy household. Handing him over to the pros, with physio and hydro on tap, is so much better than him being at home in a crate - either because I'm not here, or because letting him out is too risky.
Re: Cruciate and ears update julie don't feel guilty, he will have the best care, will be thinking of you all next week, you have been amazing with charlie x
Re: Cruciate and ears update Too right, there is no reason at all to feel guilty. You have put in hours of time to care for him and to get him in the best possible shape for this op - why would you risk anything now when you know he can get the care there that you would not be able to give him at home for that crucial period? The time will pass... and I bet Charlie will learn to Skype ;D ;D This time next week, July will only be that one calendar week closer... but psychologically, it'll be a huge leap forward. Clare
Re: Cruciate and ears update Good luck with the op always good to get a date then you can start planning and organising things/events around his progress. What a good idea re: rehab, one less thing to worry about!
Re: Cruciate and ears update Good news about the op going ahead Greyfriars looks amazing, a brilliant place for Charlie to recuperate I wouldn't feel guilty, you are doing the best you possibly can for your boy . Good luck Charlie
Re: Cruciate and ears update Nope, don't feel guilty! You have turned your life inside out to care for Charlie these last few weeks to get him ready, how great that you can take a break now and let the pros take over. He will heal A-Ok, you will get a sanity break and catch up on work, and come summer, whoo hoo!! Team Charlie will be back in business in Cornwall!! ;D
Re: Cruciate and ears update Wishing you and Charlie the best of luck. Try not to worry! Will be back to his normal self in no time
