Morning all! What an awful night Maisie cried, moaned and whimpered all night and is still doing it this morning. Is this normal? I can't remember her being like this before.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? I think they all tend to be different. I didn't have a whimper out of Juno after her spay and she was pretty much her usual self the next day. She whimpered and moaned after sedation for x-rays but not a murmur again after the operation on her elbow. I think I would ring the vet this morning for an opinion. They might suggest some painkillers if she is uncomfortable. Poor Maisie, Juno sends little licks to her and hopes she feels better soon.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? I do think they all react differently - so what's normal depends on the dog, I guess. Charlie now has very little reaction to sedation (he has had so many : ) but after a full GA he was completely out of sorts for more than 24 hours - extremely distressed to the extent the vet nurses couldn't get him to go to the loo. But on the second day, he had picked up. When he first had sedation, he wrapped himself round me and wouldn't move for 12 hours. But he doesn't do that any more. Unfortunately, I think he has got used to it. Is she still stiff?
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Thanks Rosemary. She's really not happy and her right leg appears very stiff this morning. She's had her daily dose of metacam an hour ago, which hasn't had any affect yet. Im going to pop into the vets later, so will speak to them then.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Oh, I didn't have any stiffness with Juno after her spay. Hopefully the metacam will start to have an effect soon and make her feel better. Let us know how she's getting on. Poor little girl but she will soon be back to her normal self.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Yes, I'd speak to them. Poor girl. The jumping around at the vet's won't have helped. But also, if they x-rayed her hips, she does have to be positioned with her hips flat, and that does pull them around a bit. With Charlie, that has always worn off by the next morning though.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Yes, will speak to them. She' s sort of sleeping at the moment, but crying as well.
I expect it is the combination of being pulled around for the x-rays, plus the spay.
Yes, will speak to them. Re: Crying after general anesthic? Oh, poor girl My Willow was very moany for a couple of days afterwards, but we then found out she had been given the wrong drugs from the vet and wasn't on painkillers at all, poor love. I'm sure Juno is feeling rather sorry for herself after the spay and the manipulation, and who could blame her? It would be worth a call to the vet anyway, just to put your mind at rest. Willow and Shadow send gentle licks.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? I would take her back to the vet, I don't think she should be stiff or stll crying.
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Poor Maisie. Hope she's improved during the day or that the vet was able to give you something else to help. When my last dog was given metacam for arthritis in old age, it took about a week of daily doses to show an effect. (It was then brilliant for pain control.) So I wonder if Maisie could be prescribed something faster-acting?
Re: Crying after general anesthic? Poor love , I think that some dogs hate the state of confusion , Sam was dreadful after his neutering, cried all night so I slept with him, hope she is better now ?
Re: Crying after general anesthetic? Hi all, thanks for all your messages. Just back from the vets. Maisie is a lot better, still crying a bit and the stiffness has gone. The vet thinks the crying is caused by the opiates from the GA. She didn't want to give her anything else to calm her as when she sat and played with her or fed her the crying stopped. She's hardly slept today, so I'm hoping that she is going to crash at some point and will sleep the night away!
Re: Crying after general anesthic? I hope she crashes soon! Each time Maisie was sent home from general anesthesia (spay and then tooth out) we were warned that the drug she had been given could result in extra vocalization for up to 24 hours I believe. And it did… Maisie cried and sang and moaned like a crazy girl after her spay.
