Does anyone know if nails that have been worn down through general play and walking would look much different from claws that have been trimmed with clippers? Reason for asking is that pup has come back from day care with nails shorter and much blunter than I remember. Could just have been excessive play on a hard surface as I know she played a lot yesterday but the finish seems to be straight which is not what I would expect from wear and tear.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I can't see that they would look much different... Maybe a more natural length like touching the ground as opposed to nails that have been clipped may have been cut shorter than that.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails Touching the ground - good point Lauren. I'll have a look at that. I've added a little more to my original post to explain why I'm asking.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails If they had just been clipped, they would have square sharpish edges and a flat end. Mira's take a day or two to wear and round off at the edges after I clip hers (although she doesn't do a lot of pavement walking)
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I would think nails that have been clipped would have a smoother, flat more even edge. I'm assuming you think they may have clipped her claws at day care ? I don't know but I think she would have had to have played a lot on a hard surface for the difference in her claws to be obvious after a day. ???
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails Jen, trying my hardest not to jump to conclusions but it does seem to have been a possibility. It's not the end of the world I know but I wasn't planning to clip her nails as they weren't an issue for us. And if that was the case, I feel I may need to find another day care option. Maybe it's an over reaction but it just doesn't sit right with me. Luckily I only need the day care services from time to time.

It's not the end of the world I know but I wasn't planning to clip her nails as they weren't an issue for us. And if that was the case, I feel I may need to find another day care option. Maybe it's an over reaction but it just doesn't sit right with me. Luckily I only need the day care services from time to time. [/quote] Could you ask them? Maybe it's just something they do - and view it as normal. If so, you might just have to tell them not to. If you are otherwise happy with them, of course.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails You could always just casually ask them? Like "do you think her nails are ok? I'm not sure if I need to clip them" etc etc If she's worn them down that quickly I would be worried about her wearing them down so quickly that she exposes the quick and ends up bleeding - it happens in kennels sometimes if the dogs pace a lot due to stress, though it usually takes a few days. Has she been at daycare for only one day recently? Or has been for a few days and they've only now just worn down enough that you notice? If it's happened gradually you might not have picked up on it - like when your puppy grows; sometimes you look at them and think they shot up overnight but they've been growing steadily and you just haven't noticed until it gets to a certain point.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I find your reaction completely understandable. Nails aren't really the issue I guess it's what they do without permission unless it(along with other possibilities) was part of Ts & Cs when you signed up. If it's a good daycare I might be tempted to ask them and if they had ask what else they felt it was appropriate to do without explicit permission. If I didn't like the list or the reaction to the question then I'd find somewhere else. Some of their clients may love a nail clipping service as some dogs can be difficult, they may have thought they were just saving you the bother and adding value.....
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails It was a one day visit. The last was a couple of weeks ago and I know she has a ball when she does go there. Comes home absolutely jiggered but as it's only now and again we work with that and plan other exercise accordingly. Thanks for the balanced views everyone. Can always rely on bit of common sense here. I shall have to ask them and decide from there, depending on the outcome.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I would definitely ask and take it from there. If you don't want to ask straight out you could ask if they've clipped her claws because if not you were a bit concerned about how quickly they've worn down. I think it's something they should have discussed with you first. It might be their policy that claws are kept short because of the dogs playing with each other and the chance of scratching etc. My two quite often scratch each other when they roll about playing daft. I suppose they might get complaints if a pup went home with a scratch but they should still have asked you. I'm just trying to think of a reason why they would clip claws. :
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I realise the actual cutting or not of the nails isn't your main issue, but a friend shared this interesting article/video on YouTube the other day. How to trim your dog's nails and why long toenails are harmful to your dog's health.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails That's a really interesting article jacqui, thanks for sharing. For Penny I have to keep her nails short - on her front feet her middle two nails touch and tend to cross over if I don't keep them really short so I always know when it's time for a trim! I usually do them every two weeks as she doesn't seen to wear them down very much naturally.
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails I was also told that if the nails had got overgrown to any extent you should take a little off every few days until they were right as it allows the quick to recede up the nail. If you cut off all the nail you need to in one go you're more likely to get the quick........
Re: Cut nails vs worn nails So I made the call and yes, the nails were cut but with all good intention it seems. It is part of what she does routinely for other dogs and forgot to say. Given the pupster went a little crazy when we did the handover back, that does seem reasonable. We've agreed for a check with me first next time. Thanks again all.

Re: Cut nails vs worn nails Glad that you got that sorted out , it should have been made clear that this is whats on offer and your permission asked, but I guess no harm is done and at least she enjoys herself I`ve never cut Sams nails , we tend to do pavement walking three times or so a week as well as their off lead romps , so they seem to keep themselves short, Millies were long when we first had her but I filed them , easier with a small dog
