I have not been on for a while, been very busy with other goings on. So we are having some trouble with puzzle's cut paw. She cut it on friday when playing in a river with another dog, saw vet same day got given anti-B's and told to come back in 5 days for a wound re-check. Now the wound is 1cm long and at least 1cm deep. Vet did not want to stitch it and said that if it has not started to heal by the time we come back she will stitch it then. Problem is due to were she has cut it it is very moist, but also the wound keeps weeping and it is not getting air to it so that it can dry. She has a boot on her foot when she goes outside but it can't be kept on all the time as it makes her foot sweat. The wound is being washed and flushed 2-3 times a day with epsom salts in water as it keeps collecting dirt and grit in the wound in the house and when she sneaks outside when barley opens the door. It is sore and she does intermittently limp on it and is a bit more quite than normal. Other than bandaging her foot during the day and leaving it of during the night when she is in her cage i am stuck as to what to do with her foot, its going to take a long time to heal. She also can only have on lead walks, so no canicross or search training for the next few weeks which will be a nightmare Oh and barley is doing well, apart from his allergies causing him problems he is otherwise fine thanks to our new found wonder drug ;D
Re: Cut paw Hi Annabelle - nice to hear from you! I had been wondering where you had disappeared to - how's it going?? Poor Puzzle - what a nuisance. I had wondered whether one of these spray on plaster products could be used on dogs (I was struggling with Lilly's biopsy site at the time). Something like the Savlon antisptic spray on plaster Only with regards Puzzle I note, sensibly, it says Do not apply on infected, deep, exudating wounds or burns so I guess maybe not. I would be interesting to hear if it would be useful for more minor things though. Did you see mention recently about using Arrowroot for stopping cuts bleeding? Just a thought. Glad to hear Barley is doing okay - I am intrigued about his "wonder drug"
Re: Cut paw I'm fine, having a good time at college, made some new friends and enjoying the course so far. That spray looks good for less deep cuts, would have been handy when she had an argument with a barbed wire fence the other weekend, long cut along her belly and on her head and a cut on her ear, could have been a lot worse though. Its not bleeding anymore, just constantly weeping.
Re: Cut paw Hello there Annabelle, Glad you are enjoying College.....gosh poor Puzzle she's been right in the wars hasn't she? Would she tolerate a cotton sock on it to keep it clean when you are in the house ? Glad Barley is doing great on the turmeric,my forfend had great success too with her elderly German shepherd, she was giving glucosamine too (although I know the glucosamine and it's effect has been discussed on the forum before ) Nice to see you back x
Re: Cut paw Welcome back Annabelle, so glad your making new friends and enjoying College, what course are you doing? Cut paws are a real pain, poor Puzzle Charlie cut his over a week ago, luckily it's not deep but he was being a big baby and limping, we just did lead walks for 4 days, now he is off lead and a bit of the skin has come off leaving a small pink area, he seems fine now and no limping. Arrow root is good for stopping any bleeding, we didn't cover Charlie's paw, as you said, the area doesn't get a chance to dry out, but Puzzles sounds much worse. I hope she gets better soon and doesn't require stitches. xx
Re: Cut paw Angela - she is very tolerant of it, not bothered at all when i wash it and flush it with water. She would tolerate a sock to some extent but it would be chewed off, the boot irritates her foot and she tries to get that off so a sock would come off and it would make it wet with it weeping. Helen - I am doing the Animal nursing assistant level 2 course, and will be progressing onto the level 3 animal nursing course once i have finished he level 2. She has cut her back paw before and was not bothered by it, and has also worn away the pads on her back paws when she played fetch on some concrete and again not bothered, no limping at all. She is a brave little soul so for her to limp it must be hurting. Well she is brave until barley growls at her then she turns into a quivering mess wanting cuddles cause she got told off :
Re: Cut paw Hi Annabelle, sorry I can't suggest anything different for you to try but I just wanted to pass on my best wishes and hope she has a speedy recovery,
Re: Cut paw Nice to see you here, Annabelle. I was just thinking about you guys yesterday and wondering how you were going I hope Puzzle's paw steadily heals up....such a tricky wound site to manage...
Re: Cut paw Thank you rachael, i have missed coming on here so had to start coming back on again and was looking for advice about her paw, vet has not been very helpful
Re: Cut paw I thought you would be studying something to do with animals, good luck with your course x
Re: Cut paw Hi annabelle I was wondering how you were all doing. Glad you are enjoying collage. ;D Sorry I can't think of anything else to help with puzzles foot. The only thing I can think of with it being weepy is you can get wound powder which is an antiseptic powder but not sure about using it on a deep cut. :-\ I'm very glad to hear Barley is doing so well and hope puzzles foot improves quickly.
Re: Cut paw Nice to hear from you, Annabelle! Good luck with college, I'm sure you will do well. Previous dog had a cut pad which required stitches, the whole thing was a bit of a nightmare, to be frank, involving very limited outside time and covering it with a plastic bag when he did get to go outside. It lasted about a month and the poor dog truly was depressed by the time it was all over. To the point where he basically retreated under our bed and had to be coaxed out....Hopefully you can avoid the stitches and that it heals up okay without too much drama. Sending sympathy your way, it's no fun for sure!
Re: Cut paw Thanks jen she is going back to the vet on tuesday so will have to see what she says. Lisa - she is not happy about only having lead walks and being lifted in and out of the car, she says its not fair. She is also now insisting that some ones goes into the garden with her when she has her boot on otherwise she will not go to the toilet, She is not impressed with all this fuss.
Re: Cut paw Back to the vets tommorow, wound does not look any better, and possibly even looks worse than when we last went. Going to be interesting to see what vet says, if we are not happy with what she says we will get an appointment with the other vet who we much prefer.
Re: Cut paw Thanks jen. Saw vet that i like better today. She gave her some painkillers as she noticed that she was a lot more subdued and quite than her normal self, so she should feel a bit better soon. Got to go back again on monday for another re-check or sooner if the wound starts to look nasty after the anti-b's finish. Vet said it is going to be several weeks before the wound fully heals so its going to be a long road to recovery, poor puz.
