We will be picking up our new Lab pup in a couple of weeks and I am looking for help with a dental care program. This was one area where we were lacking with our current Lab (she is 13 now) and I want to do a better job with the new one. Any advice in how to get started? What do I need to order (we just used a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste with our current Lab)? How often should we be brushing? Thanks!

In the absence of any other replies I will say I have never cleaned Toby’s teeth or my previous lab’s. Both have undergone surgery and I ask for teeth and nails to be looked at. They have never had to have any treatment or cleaning. I think it comes down to what they eat that can naturally clean them. I’m sure there will be others that do clean them but a lot of dogs won’t tolerate it.

I also have never brushed any of my dogs teeth. Meg is 6 and has great teeth but she does eat plenty of fresh rabbit ( spring to summer, courtesy of her cat friends delivery service ) My vet says rabbit is natures tooth brush as the cats have fabulous teeth too. Brushing is great if they tollerate it, but also what they eat plays a part too as @J.D says, So a few fresh bones from the butcher ( not sure which, but others on here will comment I am sure) now and again will help as well :)

We have never brushed any of our dogs teeth. They chew a lot, and destroy soft toys. We have never had a dental problem with any of 5 dogs.
