Hi, My husband and I are going to adopt an adult labrador after having owned rescue staffies for the last 13 years (our last one died earlier this year.) We've been accepted by a few lab rescue organisations but we have 3 young children aged between 20 months and 7 years so it makes it more difficult to find a suitable dog. There are a few adult labs listed on gumtree/preloved/pets4 homes which state good with children etc but I figure people might write anything to sell their dog so I don't really want to go down that route. I just wondered could anyone let me know if they know of anyone who is having to rehome their lab for genuine reasons? Our main requirements are that it must be good with children and dogs and good on lead (as I will need to push a buggy at the same time as walking it!) I'm a full time mum at home most of the day so a dog would have company much of the time. Thanks! Lorraine x
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Hello and welcome , great that you are looking to rescue an adult Lab I would contact The Labrador Rescue Trust , they rehome all over the UK , all dogs are matched carefully to potential owners , a very good reliable rescue indeed . Please take care with regards to Gumtree etc . people are often economical with the truth when looking to rehome , far better to go to a reputable organisation . Another good rescue is The Blue Cross , all dogs are assessed by a behaviourist before adoption , they have shelters all over the country too , good luck and please come back and let us know how it goes
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Black Retriever Cross also have labrador and labrador crosses and They seem to take great care matching dogs to homes...... I would echo Kate's suggestion to use a reputable agency. Best of luck
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! from a teeny tiny black 5 1/2 year old Lab known as The DivaDog and her pet human
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Thanks all for your replies - so lovely of you to take time to respond. We're registered with Labrador Rescue Trust (passed home check), Labrador Lifeline (home check tomorrow), EMLR ( on waiting list) and Labradors In Need (awaiting homecheck.) I check Blue Cross's website literally every half hour because they work on a first come first served basis (as long as you're suitable) so I want to make sure I'm first in the queue! I've also had a chat with the owner of our local pet shop who knows the local gamekeepers so he will let me know of any dogs he hears of that way. I agree with the comments re gumtree etc so I'm not looking there anymore! Please keep your fingers crossed for us and I'll let you know how we get on.
Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Sounds really positive , so pleased and yes, do keep us in the picture

Re: Desperately seeking rescue labrador! Good news - EMLR have invited us to meet a dog on Saturday - a 3 year old bitch. She sounds perfect but I'm trying not to get too excited until I meet her.... 4 sleeps to go....

She sounds perfect but I'm trying not to get too excited until I meet her.... 4 sleeps to go.... [/quote] How fab! Keeping my fingers crossed, if it is their latest rescue she is a beauty. Harry Cook and his team are very careful with their matches though, needs to be just the right family. Do let us know.
