Title says it all really, Murphy has swollen eye lids, red pupils and "slitty" eyes as if he has hay fever! No other symptoms, still eating/drinking/excercising as normal. Can/do labs get hay fever?? Cheers. Steve.
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Charlie definitely has a reaction to tree pollen, his eyes get a bit red. I don't know if it's the same mechanism as hayfever though, but I don't see why not.
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Yes, they can. Usually dogs with hay fever don't get respiratory problems like we do (runny nose and sneezing) - symptoms are more likely to be itchy skin, chewing feet, scratching a lot and red eyes. They can get this from pollen, contact with a problem plant, mould spores, dust mites, fleas..... If he has swollen, red eyes then I'd probably see the vet about it - I would want a vet's opinion on that as it could be something else. If it does turn out to be an allergy the vet can talk about what to do to relieve the symptoms (washing his eyes, medication etc). I'm sure his eyes are very uncomfortable, poor lad. My dog gets hayfever in spring and autumn and at those times he's on antihistamines and more recently steroids (low dose). We give him fish oil year round which is also meant to help (and which makes the antihistamines more effective due to some kind of interaction effect). The drug regime is very effective (so far).
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? As Rachael says, they can and do get hay fever. But with those eyes, I'd go straight to the vet, as it may be some other kind of irritation or infection. Let us know how you get on.
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? One of mine had a grass pollen allergy, itchy and red , Vet said to give him Piriton, but I would definately check with your Vet first before giving anything .
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Hi all, thanks for the advice. As it didn`t seem to be getting any better, in fact the left eye was a LOT worse I`ve just taken Murphy to the Vets, it would appear there is a "foreign body" is the left eye so left Murphy there to be operated on House is really empty without him, strange how much of an impact they make in such a short period of time!
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Poor man I'm sure he's in good hands and will be fine once he's had this seen to. He'll be home soon. When can you pick him up?
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Oh poor boy… Hope he's home soon, and the house is no longer empty.
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Just collected a very subdued Murphy from the vets having had a thorn removed from his left eye Bland diet for the next two days but he should be on the mend now Thanks for all the good wishes ;D
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Sending Murphy lots of tummy rubs from me. Hope his eye heals quickly x
Re: Do labs suffer from hay fever? Awww bless him, that must have been uncomfortable!! Hope he has a speedy recovery!
