I dont like using chemicals on the dogs if I can help it , my old Lab girl Tess once had a really nasty reactions to Frontline and is made me wary . I have used a product called Billy no Mates from CSJ , I`m a big fan of CSJ and this product seemed quite good but I have run out and before ordering any , I was reading about how wonderful diatomaceous earth is for all creepies and biters , it is also reasonably priced , just wondered if anyone else had used it ?

I've got a big tub of the stuff here but haven't used it for anything as yet. I bought it a few months ago after reading about it, as my Poodles do like to get Chiggers in the autumn months and I hate keep covering them in chemicals.

I was all for giving it a go for getting rid of fleas too until I read a post one day, saying it was no safer than using scientifically tested spot on treatments, in fact it could be worse :-\ . How true this is, I have no idea though. All I know is, it certainly put me off covering my kittens in it, when I found they had a few Hopping Friends. Instead I used a fine toothed comb to get rid of them.

I have three dogs and never use any preventative flea treatment and they don't have fleas at all. In 25 years of owning dogs I have only seen one flea on one dog!

I should wait and see if your dog gets fleas and meantime do nothing!

As someone involved in the pest control industry, we tend to find that flea infestations rarely occur where there are no cats.

And although dogs generally often get fleas, they are curiously usually cat fleas rather than dog fleas.

Thats ironic Pippa , we lost our cat a year ago and havent noticed fleas since then, not that our dogs ever got a bad infestation, just the odd one when the cat was in residence .

I wonder if some dogs are more prone to fleas than others too? A bit like people and headlice?! I find the cat gets fleas without passing them to the dog, quite often. This despite the fact that they share a bed!)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some dogs had some natural resistance. It also helps is dogs sleep on hard floors (even though they have a bed on the hard floor) because what fleas really love best of all, is a nice cosy fitted carpet. :)
