A well known writer of the dog world says:" We all want to believe that our dog loves praise, cuddling and being stroked by us, more than all the world. The hard truth may be that he would rather eat roast beef or chase butterflies." Mattinson, P. Ebury Press 2014 : When training your pup/dog what rewards work well for your pup?
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Any old dog food? Are dogs fussy? Do you have the same food for all rewards or is there a time when something special comes out? Would you use a commercially produced bag treat or just do it yourself?
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Lola is really food driven and is more than happy with a bit of kibble as rewards and it means it is easier for me to keep on top of how much she is eating but as a special treat chunks of chicken or ham. And yes she does chase butterflies
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Food - depends on what we are doing to what treats - ie. lead walking must be chicken or cheese, retrieve and recall anything

[/quote] Depends on where we are in training, what we are training and how well the dog done From freshly cooked chicken, honey roast on the bone ham, raw eggs right down to kibble or bits of old biscuit Basically better than I eat

Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? I would have said food...but I've been working super hard on "being exciting". A mix of playing, toys, playing with treats (not just being boring and stuffing them in his mouth) and so on has been very successful. So I'd say, yes, he'd rather eat roast beef than get a pat, but he'd rather play an exciting game involving sea hide with me than go say hello to another dog! I'm starting to view distractions as just the competition! ;D ;D ;D
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Retrieving or hunting for my spaniels. Nothing else comes close, not even roast beef! ;D
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Cooked or raw meat is No. 1. Sausage or cheese is next. All other forms of meat product or dairy product or bread or biscuit next. Retrieving from water or jumping over something are inherent rewards - he will do those things just for the enjoyment. A quick run with me, the chance to get out of the car, the removal of the lead or the chance to hold a squeaky toy are also things he likes and things that I use as rewards. Attention is a reward he likes but not if he thinks food might be around. If there is food anywhere near and you try to pat Obi he backs away. It's like he's saying "NO, that is not what I want! Pats are boring, idiot! Give me the food!!" Definitely agree that he is not really working for the attention
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Food......... 1.Hot roast chicken 2. Roast chicken 3. Steamed chicken 4.a whole fish for dogs sea biscuit 5.a piece of sea biscuit 6. Kibble Retreives still feel like a chore to Dexter, mostly he does it because I ask it of him .if I choose the area and the item right he can love it but he does the retreive to get a food reward not for the joy of chasing a ball
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? Retrieving for Sam every time, he loves any food but prefers his ball/dummy . Millie also loves retrieving but prefers food
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? We wouldn't be seen dead chasing a butterfly! : We hold out for bigger fayre.... Sadly, very little trumps a good "hunt" when outside, but sardines (which I don't carry around regularly) or cat food pouches (easier!) are pretty good jackpots. Anything cheesy comes pretty high on the list - the rind of ancient parmesan is good - but really in the house or garden, any food will do. Unfortunately a ball or dummy is pretty low down on the list. My biggest tip is to keep it varied when it comes to food rewards. Something different usually works better than something she had this morning or yesterday, whether it is home made or bought, and something moist or smelly.
Re: Does your dog chase butterflies? treats and rubs! Yes, lol, this bugger loves to chase butterflies, too! I love him!
