Hi. I'm interested to know if anyone has any experience or knowledge of dog first aid. I have never found a good book about it and while I know that taking a dog straight to the vet is best etc there are some situations when this is not immediately possible and I feel it would be good to have some basics at my fingertips for emergency situations. What experience does anyone have in this area? Has anyone had to administer any serious first aid or cpr? I have recently found good advice on Phillips William's Castlemans Gundogs page but don't know if I'm allowed to share it. She has a page of emergency measures but also mentions canine first aid courses. Has anyone done one of these? Was it useful? Can anyone recommend one in Scotland? So many question-sorry- but I don't want to end up in a situation where my dog is hurt and I regret not having been better prepared. Thanks a lot and enjoy the improved weather with your dogs. ))
Maybe ask around the local veterinary practices. My vet's run a first aid course every year for pet owners but we're the other end of the country to you unfortunately. Personally I've not been to it as I'm always working when it's on, but I have to do regular human first aid training. I work in a school so have seen quite a few broken bones and nasty injuries over the years. If you're looking for a book 'Veterinary Advice for Gundog Owners' by Gillian Averis who is a vet is fairly comprehensive.
Another idea, here St. John's Ambulance sometimes bring in a Vet and put on one day dog first aid courses. Maybe yours do too?
