Hi all,, Anyone been through changing their dogs food to give them firmer poos? My 14 mth old pup has been on Acana.
Before trying changing food to improve poo consistency have you reduced food quantity? Overfeeding can produce soft poos. Are you looking to move to a food with a different protein source as soft poo could also be related to some sensitivity to an ingredient in the present food.
Interestingly I've just switched from Acana large breed puppy food as my dog had started getting soft stools after being on it with no problems since we got him (he's 13 months)! We switched to Carnilove Large Breed Puppy as this is a different protein source (salmon and turkey whereas Acana is prominently chicken) and so far so good, but we're only about a week in so still settling! I liked Carnilove because it is similar to Acana in that it is 70% meat and 30% vegetables and grain free!
Cool thanks for those suggestions... I regard to overfeeding, because she's quite a good look and weight, could this be still an issue? Hmmm... different protein, so say instead of beef, change to chicken or whatever..
@Me and my dog As a first step it may be worth reducing quantity a little and see how it goes. It could be that as growth has slowed down her daily ration can be reduced - it doesn't take much extra food to cause a problem. If I was changing foods because of poo quality I would probably move to a different protein source just to rule out any sensitivities to a protein source.
If a dog is the right weight on a food but has loose stools, splitting the daily ration into more (and therefore smaller) portions may help. Some dogs are not great at digesting a large meal in one go
We’ve just changed from Beta puppy to Pooch and Mutt puppy which has solved the same issue for us. Much less smelly too. Again has high protein content and no grains. Good luck
