I’ve read gently adopted a released seeing eye dog, and he is perfect in every way, except... some nights he’s doing his business in his room and eating it. He normally goes once first thing in the morning, sometimes once on a walk and then once after dinner and then sometimes he’s throwing in an extra one over night. I always take him outside around 11pm and give him the command to go, he usually urinates but nothing else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi @Sparklydog do you mean retired seeing eye dog or one that didn't make the grade? How old is the dog? Reason for the organistion letting him go? How much are you feeding him? And what are you feeding him? Four rounds of fecaes is an extraordinary amount. Sounds like you're overfeeding him or the food is low grade filler. Consequently, I think we need more information
He’s released because he is too distracted to be a seeing eye dog, he’s 18 months old. I feed him 2 cups of Royal Canin (given to us when we adopted him, plan on transitioning him into another of the next week) in the morning and 2 cups in the evening. He is currently still on same feeding schedule he was on during training 7am and 5pm, I’m trying to slowly move it to 6/7pm. I’ve also been giving him a spoonful of steamed pumpkin, to try and bulk his feceas up a bit.
Just taking him out at 11:00pm may not be enough. Some dogs seem to need to walk a bit before they take a dump. At home our dogs can go out in the yard any time they want, but at our Cabin we have to take them out and it often takes them a couple of 100 yards of walking before they do their business. They will usually pee right a way if they need to, but #2 takes a little longer.
I agree with Michael that this is a LOT of poop every day. My dogs poop once a day, about 5 small nuggets. They are raw fed and there isn't any bulk or waste. Royal Canin is heavy in grains and carbs and fillers, and you are adding more with the pumpkin - which is added fibre (filler). I would suggest firstly looking at your dog's body condition and deciding if they are overweight and (probably) then substantially reducing the amount they eat. You should be able to easily feel (and count) your dog's ribs. There should be a clear waist and stomach defined... IF your dog is somehow slim and athletic looking, yet you still want to address all this poop, I think you will need to find a better quality food than Royal Canin with less fillers in it....
