Today I have managed to lose my dog whistle that I have been using for ages . It's a silent whistle so it screws together which is how I managed to lose it as I have got part of it but not the rest. I walked a long way back looking for it but couldn't find it . Anyway as I never use it as a silent whistle I was wondering about swapping to an ordinary Acme, but as I have taught Ripple quite a few whistle commands I don't know whether it will be a problem swapping to another whistle. Also is one whistle better than another? It looks like the 211.5 is recommended for Labradors so is this the one to go with? Blimmin' cross with myself - hate losing things .
I use 211.5 but some people use 210.5 which is higher pitched but I imagine it doesn't matter as long as you then stick with same pitch then on. Shame about losing your one. I guess get a normal one and try one of his commands he already knows with new whistle and see what happens..? I assume you could still buy the same one you lost if you needed to? No expert I'm afraid. Good luck! Ps have lost tons of whistles and now have them scattered about-car, house, handbag etc..also hate losing things but it happens all too frequently!
The Acme whistles are great as they're very consistent and if you lose them, you can always buy a new one. I have several. You never know, Ripple might generalise, or he might not. If he does, brilliant. If not, go back a few steps in the training plan with the new whistle; he'll soon pick up what you're after. I doubt it'll be a big problem. I use the 210.5 whistles, which I believe is actually a Spaniel whistle - it's what the breeder gave me, though, and I never saw the need to change. I believe the 211.5 might carry a little better over distance, but I may be wrong there.
I use an acme whistle.......the 210.5 one but when I forgot it once my friend used her 211.5 and Harley responded the same with the different whistle.
Trying to visualise what sort of hat you've got. Definitely going to give an Acme a go then, not sure which one yet. I think Ripple will manage to adapt as he is used to my idiosyncrasies.
I used a 212 for Charlie - 5 pips for his recall. Betsy came with a 211.5 whistle and 3 x 3 pips. Charlie recalls on the first 3 pips of Betsy's recall on a 211.5 whistle. Betsy recalls on any whistle sound, even Charlie's stop whistle.
