We dont eat out very often but did yesterday , we had lunch at a local restaurant where I was complely overfaced with a huge plate of rare roast beef, veggies and all the trimmings . Looking at what was left on the plate, it seemed to me to be wasteful for it to go into a bin so I asked our waiter for a doggy bag which he was more than happy to bring . I was staggered at the remarks from the man on the next table , speaking to his wife but obviously intended for our ears, saying that it was a disgusting request and what a shame that we could not afford to feed our dogs on a more suitable diet I dont do confrontation but was so angry and quietly told him what I thought of his uncalled for remarks, our lucky pair had roast beef, veggies and roast potatoes with their tea Just wondering if others do the same, or maybe I am a proper meanie to ask for a doggy bag ?
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? You haven't met my husband......there's rarely anything left over when we eat out ;D I think it's an excellent use of resources though, I hate food wastage! Some people should keep their opinions to themselves, right up there with the man who said to let the dogs chase squirrels :
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? I think that that is a GREAT treat for a dog. How can human quality beef and vegetables be a poor meal for a dog? And nothing cheap about it either. You're a champ for telling him what you thought of his comments. What a rude man.
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? That man must have been up the creek!! I thought he was going to mention how dreadful food wastage was! Much better to give it to the dog than throw it away. My Mother always asked for a doggy bag and the waiter used to wrap it up in foil in a beautiful swan shape
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? doggy bags are most definately ok...in fact, the other weekend I was out with friends and we all put our leftovers onto one plate and asked the restaurant staff to bag it for my two, who got tasty leftovers for supper when I got in! Isn't it odd that folk seem to have so much time to comment on what everyone else is doing 'wrong'....!
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? I would do exactly the same as you Kate, but I don't think I would of been so quiet about telling the bloke what I thought ;D
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? It's an interesting cultural difference - in the U.S., it is the expectation that you will ask for a box for whatever is left on your plate. Why do people think it is so odd over here??! And why did he think he had the right to comment?? Well done for speaking to him - especially for doing it quietly. People amaze me. Yesterday afternoon I parked my car in the supermarket car park, and the man next to me stated banging on the driver's window, and told me he was going to stand there and catch my door as I opened it because he didn't want me damaging his car. I was both amazed and offended - did he have so little faith in me that he thought I was just going to throw my car door open with no regard for his vehicle??! I found it quite intimidating to have him hunched over my door as I got out, and I did tell him that I do actually always get out of my car with care because I am aware of the lack of room between parking spaces. Sometimes I wonder if the very blunt way that people might speak to each other online is transferring over into real life... Clare
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? We seldom go out to eat, and when we do it is usually to our local, where dogs are allowed, so she gets the leftovers once we have finished eating and I don't need to bag them up! But there are three points that would have annoyed me, firstly - why would it be better to throw good food away than to use it, secondly - why did he think the food was not appropriate for dogs, and thirdly - what business was it of his???
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? At least it was intended for the dogs. My gran gets a doggy bag & eats whats left for her tea. Yuk!
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? I worked in the US for a few weeks and the portions were enormous....everyone took their leftovers home and I definitely had mine for my tea! ;D
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? Phew....so glad for those last two comments. Doggy bag leftovers here definitely go into human tummies, not doggy.....and they are in a box, not a bag....
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? I was about to say the same as Clare and Barbara - in the US it is almost expected. I had to laugh once when we were so stuffed from our main course extravaganza on holiday, when offered desert we declined (shock horror), but were encouraged to chose something anyway and they would box it up for later. Such a completely different attitude to food on all levels. In this country its such a shame we are made to feel guilty if we ask. We have after all payed for it, its our choice what we subsequently do with it.
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? When I first saw the title of this post I thought you meant the doggy toweling bags! Had visions of trying to wrestle a large Lab into one! Think they are a very good idea but not sure how I would get them into it in the car after a walk.
Re: Doggy Bags , thoughts ? i agree with you kate, you have paid for the meal, it is up to you what you do with it, good on you , you should have told him to mind his own business
