Re: Dogs and honey .... Interesting, several people on the forum have advocated the use of honey and I've certainly given it to Riley when his sensitive stomach is causing him problems
Re: Dogs and honey .... It is interesting, but would be more helpful with links to the relevant studies that support the claims made. There have been quite a few studies carried out on honey. This one for example
Re: Dogs and honey .... I`ve used honey on a couple of occasions with some degree of success . The first time was when one of my terriers were struck by a viper in France , she was terribly ill for a few days but slowly recovered . Her appetite was affected , my French Vet suggested a small ammount of honey in warm water poured into her mouth, it was like rocket fuel ,worked a treat I too am sceptical of many claims of miraculous cures , but local honey also helped another dog who had a severe grass polen allergy , may have been a coincience I suppose
Re: Dogs and honey .... My OH suffers from spring time hayfever very badly. We go to Cornwall, he buys and eats local honey as enthusiastically as Winnie the Pooh. His hayfever clears up. It works! Hurrah! I think this is nonsense. His hayfever is most likely triggered by the immense London plane trees, not pollen from flowers on Bodmin moor. But he loves it, enjoys searching out, choosing and buying it. Sometimes he has little daydreams about keeping bees. He thinks it's good for him, and it probably is.
Re: Dogs and honey .... We have bees here...usually about 6 to 8 colonies depending on the time of year. We part rough filter our honey, so it does contain a lot of minerals, as opposed to the commercial very finely filtered honey

Sometimes I share OH's daydreams about keeping bees. . Love to see some pics and hear about beekeeping if you'd start a "my bees" thread? Only if you get chance/time of course.
Re: Dogs and honey .... We had wild bees living in our roof last summer (till they got removed by a beekeeper). We had some of their honey and it was incredibly good. Ever since I've harboured a little beekeeping dream As Obi has recently had some allergy problems I've been reading about various remedies and local raw honey does come up as a treatment option. On vet websites.
Re: Dogs and honey ....
local raw honey does come up as a treatment option. On vet websites.
I think the theory is that tiny amounts of pollen make it into the honey - this is a pollutant in the honey, which (I understand) does not deliberately contain pollen - it also contains other pollutants such as diesel particles etc. Then, the theory goes, these small particles of pollen act in a similar way as a vaccine or homeopathy remedy. Ok, so far. So is the allergen the flower pollen (as opposed to the much more common allergens of tree and grass pollen) typically collected by bees? if so, fine. Maybe. Have you come across another theory? OH would be thrilled - he is convinced it works. I'd love it, if true.
Re: Dogs and honey .... No, only that theory. In the case of your OH I think that what works is leaving London, like you said. If Obi is having an itchy period the the best cure is leaving Canberra and travelling to the coast - works very quickly. No honey involved.
Re: Dogs and honey .... Oops! Seem to have accidentally locked this earlier. Sorry folks. All fixed now I think. x
Re: Dogs and honey .... Reading this forum always costs me money! I have now gone and ordered some local honey for my hayfever! I'll let you know if it works!! I use Munuka honey for my pooches, if they are poorly it's great in warm water to get them drinking and keep them well hydrated
Re: Dogs and honey .... Me too! I stopped at the shop on the way home from the walk to buy honey for our toast this morning! Lovely stuff. It's so beautiful too.
Re: Dogs and honey .... Boogie, I think you have to buy honey produced locally to you to help with hay fever.
Re: Dogs and honey .... I can start a honey thread if anyone is interested, this is a good time of year to start one If anyone on our walk would like some local honey on Monday please let me know Some photos from last year... Uncapped queen cells..we were "superseding" a colony last year..queen bees only live around 3 years, and they never leave the hive. Superseding is away of bringing on new queen bees, by superseding hopefully your colony then doesn't need to swarm
