Just a quickie for advice really.

Just about to get into car to take Rosie somewhere for a good long walk. I need to pop into a shop and was going to do it on way home. But can u leave her in the car while I pop in?

I know people are vilified for leaving dogs in cars but it's pretty cold today and I'd only be 5 minutes.

    Thoughts?

I leave Charlie in the car for a few minutes - if it's not hot. I try to park where I can see the car from the shop if I can though, because a lady who I met when out for a walk once told me about a car being broken into and a dog stolen - so of course I worry about that now.

My top tip for leaving dogs in cars (for a few minutes) is figure out how to lock your car while switching off the interior alarm...I speak from rather painful experience... ::)

I do this too - on a cool day leave Obi for a few minutes with the windows down a little and the car in the shade.

However I have returned to the car to find two people discussing how best to smash my window to get the dog out. On a mid-winter day when it was about 5 degrees in the sun. With the dog sitting on the seat gazing at them with a huge grin. As I drove off they yelled abuse. So, yes, some people will vilify you and not credit you for having any judgement.... I do understand why, though, as some people don't. ;D

Thanks for your replies. Common sense told me it would be fine but had a niggle it might be frowned upon. I'd be mortified if that had happened to me Oberon, you poor thing! That must have been awful!

If they had broken the window? Would they be at fault legally or you???? What a minefield!

Definitely need to work out the alarm....our first ever gundog lesson I think my alarm went off four times :-[

I'm more worried about theft than heat at this time of year if I pop in to a shop. I try and reverse up to a wall so people can't tell there's a dog in the back :)

I'm paranoid too, I leave dogs and hubbie in the car together (never when hot obviously).

I wont leave mine in the car at all, but then there has been a run of thefts of dogs from cars down here recently , especially in season when visitors often leave them to pop into the supermarkets . What I hate to see more than anything though is dogs tied up outside supermarkets , a regular sight, one that fills me with dread ::)

Oooh yeah, that is one thing I will never do - tie up outside the supermarket. Gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I quite often take Lady with me if I pop out to the shops in the car. Her getting nicked out of it does worry me a bit though. I have a Defender with a cargo cage and a lockable dog gate in the back and rear window bars, so it would be more than a 2 minute job to break her out I think. I leave the side windows open at the back and you can arm the alarm without the volumetric sensor by using the key in the door lock rather than locking with the plip key. Don't know if that's a general thing with alarms though.

Oh yes I never leave Riley tied up outside a shop! Generally I try to leave him at home if I need to shop.

My car has a button that you press inside the car which means the alarm is not set when you lock it. I had to get the manual out after my faux pas at training ::)

No dogs in cars here usually....to hot all the time, even with ac on I wouldn't chance it,but we did stop the other week with me in the car with him while Chris ran in...caveat being,if I think Dex has had enough, get a taxi home! ;D

No dogs left in cars here either. Too many dog thefts and it is generally pretty much frowned upon. Although I did see a beautiful Weimaraner left in a car in a well known super market car park, in the car with all the windows opened. I wonder if he was still there when the owners returned :( Definitely would never leave my dogs tied up outside a shop either, although no one would nick Charlie ::) Helen xx

Well, I for sure would not leave Simba in the van unsupervised, although not because of theft....not sure how much of the interior would be left intact by the time I got back.... ::)
