Mum and Dad are just into their new house, still camping out a bit...This is my furry responsibility for the week ...... Derry the red setter: image by dexterpops02, on Flickr His comfy position isn't on the couch ,he likes to back up and sit his back legs on you and stand on his front legs!he can maintain this for as long as the human he is sitting on can! image by dexterpops02, on Flickr He's massive but he's a very gentle giant.....I'll post a video of his singing too but Mums cross because I did it before I washed his face!He slobbers a LOT more than any Labrador I know!
Re: Don't Tell Dexter! Ah! My husband's old Irish Setter used to do exactly the same thing with the backing up - it's hilarious! Also with the slobber - she used to always manage to get slobber on top of her long elegant nose on each walk, with a 'dribble and shake' manouvre ;D ;D
Re: Don't Tell Dexter! We will keep your secret Angela. I love setters - they always look so elegant. (not so keen on the slobber though)

(not so keen on the slobber though)
He moves like he's doing dressage,he looks lovely...I'm not confident with his recall though...he has an absconding history .......but he's 7 now so Dad tells me to get over it,he's fine now poor lad has been a bit disorientated by their house move and the decorators come in tomorrow so I think it's helped me being back to take him out and give him a bit of undivided x
Re: Don't Tell Dexter! Derry is stunning and my Charlie does the backing up manouver too - so funny and he slobbers a bit too ;D - hmm maybe some Red Setter in there too : Hope you having fun Angela and that your mum and dad are OK in their new home xx
Re: Don't Tell Dexter! He has a wonderful voice the most I get from Riley is a harrummph as he collapses in his bed to show his disgust at no play time : A gross generalisation but I understood setters in general had a slight tendency to wander. I guess they were bred to work at distance so they don't really think about being far away from you. I had a hankering after a Gordon Setter at one point
Well, that may well be true of those with working heritage not too far away in their ancestry (just like it is for GSPs and Vizlas) but the Irish setter we had basically thought she was a person, didn't much like other dogs or getting wet and stayed very close indeed at all times! Imagine OH's surprise then, when he is suddenly the proud owner of Merla lab, who takes off at 90 mph at the least excuse ;D ;D He made the fatal mistake yesterday of taking his eyes off her while he picked up the poo (they were out without me) ........He's not quite sure where she went, but it was a long few minutes until they were reunited apparently! ;D ;D
Re: Don't Tell Dexter! Yep, she's fab, but on walks 360 degree vigilance 100% of the time is the only way to avoid (most) disasters!
