hey everyone just got back from a walk with my 6 month old pup and im about at the end of me tether :- on the lead pulls :- work in progress not 100% but better than was (this is me and him no distraction) pulling when sees a dog or a person:- this is major pulling to the extent that he is choking himself trying to get to the dog/person its got to the point where im ignoring people and cross over if possible or turn round and walk the other way because im to busy pulling him past the person and to stop him jumping up. off the lead:- same again really when there is me and him off lead he walks maybe 10 feet in front or behind and recalls no problem at all but if there is a person or a dog I might as well be sat at home recall doesn't exist he's just head down and gone till he gets where he going leaving me behind screaming in frustration when I eventually catch up I put him on his lead tell him no and apologize to the person (this can be very embarrassing especially if he's been swimming before hand) obviously I want him socialable but this behaviour is not acceptable im at the point where I dread walk time and pray I don't see people

It will help you work through a programme to get your dog to come back when you call him when there are distractions (other dogs, people etc). It really works, but there is no quick fix, you've got to work through "proofing" your recall training against distractions.
pulling when sees a dog or a person:- this is major pulling to the extent that he is choking himself trying to get to the dog/person its got to the point where im ignoring people and cross over if possible or turn round and walk the other way because im to busy pulling him past the person and to stop him jumping up.
I had this with my dog. I kept him on a padded back fastening harness, that way I could swap his lead from his collar to his harness and so could safely physically pull him away from anther dog or person if I had to do so, without him getting used to pulling and lunging on a flat collar. Or choking himself. Then, I had massively high value treats and clicker trained sit. I got him to sit and kept his attention on me clicking for continued calm sit with the high value treats (this took a while). (I don't think everyone thinks this is the right thing to do, some people walk passed as fast as possible, but C&T sit it worked best for me). I never, ever, allowed him to get to the other person or other dog while he was pulling or lunging. And if the other owner said "let them say hello" I'd say no, please walk on etc. I'd ask people not to approach him while he was pulling towards them. I'm sure people thought I was rude, but if he got rewarded in this way I couldn't get his attention again for ages when there was another dog. Putting distance between you and other dogs/people, ie crossing the road, is a good thing while you teach him to cope. But you do have to more closer and closer gradually. I hope helpful. Others might have better tips, but the above helped me when I was struggling. Good luck.
Re: dread taking my pup out help Hi I have a similar problem with my two labs when on the lead but they bark as they are very nervous. I use high value very smelly rewards which when ever possible I have ready before we meet the person/ dog. They now associate seeing person/dog with a treat instead of barking they nudge my hand. Most or the time anyway we still have the odd hiccup. : Look at the kikopup counter conditioning video on you tube that explains a similar method. Good luck Jen
Re: dread taking my pup out help
where I dread walk time and pray I don't see people
Been there, done that, wore the harness!theres been times I came home in tears.... You can fix this...Julie is right Total Recall will help you train a safe ,reliable recall.Dexter is our first dog and I thought using a whistle was much too difficult and professional for a 'pet' owner like me but I really enjoyed working through it and it really does work ;D Where do I start with our pulling, everyone must get fed up about me banging on about it but I do whenever anyone needs help because I felt so out of my depth and miserable and I've fixed it ;D ;D ;D if I can, anyone can! Get equipped with info first.... Pippa has written lots of training articles on the main sight.....I've written out everything I did really recently for Lois .....I'll have a look through and see if I can find it .....and I needed quite a bit of time too.....I hit crisis point round the 8/9 the month....Dexter is 14 months now...we've been competent for a while but even this week I got my clicker back out to tighten our heel on lead up and I have just come in on cloud 9 after the most amazing loose lead on collar walk....I would never have thought we would manage it...... Don't lose heart,I haven't found it easy but we've got there ;D What's your pups name?and what colour....? Best wishes Angela x

Re: dread taking my pup out help bailey and he's a black male he's just full of it constantly lol I will have a look into the things that have been mentioned in posts things can only get better hopefully lol
Re: dread taking my pup out help Dont lose heart , honestly I remember actually crying because I thought my Sam ( now 2 years old ) would never ever walk nicely on his lead . Like you I dreaded seeing other dogs and feared that Sam would pull me off my feet as he is a big lad , but persistance and training won in the end , you will get there if you follow the same routine . One thing I found helped a lot, sounds ridiculous I know but the moment Sam pulled , I changed direction , even walking backwards at times . Pulling is the dog saying " hurry up I want to get there fast " so by walking backwards , they are not going anywhere , it does work if you stick at it, good luck
